These ironstone mines were located to the south of the Muirkirk Branch (Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway) and north of the Lugar Iron Works (1845-1928) with which they were connected by an internal tramway.
In 1856 the pits and Lugar Iron Works were bought by the Eglinton Iron Works Company (part of William Baird & Co).
A 1790 beam engine was relocated here from the Blair collieries in 1875.
After the pits closed the beam engine was relocated to the new Highhouse Colliery around 1894 by William Baird & Co.
