This iron works had its own private railway network, largely to the north, serving a number of coal mines. Private workers trains ran from the works to these mines, some of which were quite distant.
Following the closure of the iron works the workshops and loco shed remained in use, inherited by the [[National Coal Board in 1948. The workers trains continued until roughly 1949.
The works site closed in 1968 (around the time of the closure of Kaimes Colliery in Muirkirk). Parts remain in varied use today.
