Dawsholm Tunnel

Location type

Tunnel

Name and dates

Dawsholm Tunnel (1896-1920)

Description

This is a disused single track cut-and-cover tunnel located between Dawsholm (to the east) and the Temple Gas Works. The Kelvindale Viaduct [Gas Works] was to the immediate east, crossing the River Kelvin. The Forth and Clyde Canal parallels the railway tunnel to the immediate north.

The branch ran to exchange sidings on the south side of the Temple Gas Works.

This line is shown on OS Maps until closure of the Dawsholm branch in 1966. Some sources indicate closure in the 1920s. Photographs taken in 1964 show the bridge's girders removed with only the piers remaining.
