Name and dates

Kipps Shed (1864-1963)

Opened on the Monkland and Kirkintilloch Railway.

Description

This shed was located to the north side of the Kipps branch of the Monkland and Kirkintilloch Railway just east of Greenside Junction. It was a double ended three road shed approach from both east and west. The site was bounded to the north by the gas works. There was a modern coal bunker at the east end of the site, close to the water tank. The turntable was to the west.

The shed was built around 1860 just to the west of the site of the Greenside Works of the Ballochney Railway.

The Mosside Works was located to the south of the Kipps Branch just across the line.

British Railways assigned the code 65E. Closure came in 1962/3, however the shed was retained as a base for the pre-grouping locomotives restored in 1959 until their withdrawal in 1967 when they were moved to the first Glasgow Museum of Transport [1st].

The site is currently vacant.

The M&K Kipps branch finished at the Kipps Colliery described as being at Kipps Coalhill close to Archibald Frew's Kippsbyre Colliery. The Ballochney was to extend from here east.

To the north was Kipps Colliery and to the south were the Kippsbyre Collieries, both owned by Frew. Both were close to the line.
