Description

This steel works was opened by the Lanarkshire Steel Company Ltd in the 1890s and gradually expanded. The site had an open hearth furnace and rolling mills. It was served by two sets of sidings. From the north were sidings coming from the Motherwell New Lines (Caledonian Railway), built around the same time. That line, before its extension north, was essentially a double track headshunt for the works coming from Shields Colliery Junction. To the south was a further set, located north of Flemington station, equipped with an overhead crane. From the station the works' bank of cooling towers could be seen.

The line from Shields Colliery Junction gained more and more sidings and connections to the works eventually leading to a considerable number of railway bridges next to each other over Craigneuk Street. These do not survive and were to the east of the remaining bridge crossing Windmillhill Street/Craigneuk Street.

Slag was dumped to the north of the works, on a small area of land entirely bound by railways, and on the north bank of the South Calder Water.

The works was taken over by Colvilles Ltd in the 1930s following which it focused on flats and sections.

Closure was in 1978 and the site was cleared.
