The London Underground celebrates its 160 year anniversary today, making it the oldest underground network in the world.
On January 10 1863, the Metropolitan Railway opened its new subterranean railway between Paddington and Farringdon, ushering in a new age of transport - the London Underground. The next phase of operation on the Elizabeth Line is to begin on November 6, Transport for London has confirmed. Trains from Reading and Heathrow Airport will run east through the cross-London tunnels to Abbey Wood, and trains from Shenfield will run west to Paddington.

Passengers travelling through London Paddington are facing continued disruption after a train derailment.
Network Rail said the empty train had passed a red signal outside the station, activating an automatic derailment on Thursday. Overhead power lines also came down. Operator GWR expects to run only half its normal service on Friday morning. Network Rail said a limited service would run to and from London Paddington until the end of Friday.
