The trains are running again through one of the most glorious stretches of Yorkshire's countryside, but at a hefty cost. The price of getting the Wensleydale Railway back on track after a major landslip on a remote and inaccessible embankment closed it from October last year until this spring, cutting off its income from passengers, was £100,000, which is a very big ask for the small organisation that runs it.

A tremendous feat of engineering to repair a significant landslip which threatened the future of a Dales railway has been carried out by just three men.
Wensleydale Railway is comparing the job to restoring the line at Dawlish, near Devon, washed away in this year's storms, which hit the headlines when it was repaired in record time by more than 300 network rail staff and contractors. The £100,000 job on the Wensleydale Railway has taken less than four months after a landslip at Akebar, between Bedale and Leyburn, effectively cut the 16 mile railway in half and caused the suspension of services from Christmas 2013. After seven weeks of very hard work by Wensleydale Railway staff and volunteers, the damaged embankment at Akebar has been repaired and track is now being relaid across the site of the landslip.

A fundraising event is being held to get a North Yorkshire heritage railway back up and running after a landslip.
The Wensleydale Railway is not able to operate trains to Finghall Lane, Leyburn or Redmire after heavy rain caused the landslip earlier this year. More than £30,000 is needed to repair the embankment at Akebar between Leyburn and Bedale.
