In 1890 additions and adaptations were made to the Marquis of Lothian's Waggonway, extending the line south to Lingerwood Mine (and the under development site of the Lady Victoria Colliery) and northwards to Easthouses Pit and on to the Shaw's Coal Depot. Coal was taken south from the various mines to Lingerwood Mine (and later the Lady Victoria Colliery) for preparation. Entry into the system of private lines was from Newbattle Signal Box and onto the West Bryans Siding - the system being reached from this reversing spur. This layout of connection protected the main line from possible runways which would run north up the main line over the Newbattle Viaduct. That connection was to be replaced by a new one alongside the Lady Victoria Colliery when it opened in 1895. See Lady Victoria Colliery (Lothian Coal Co Ltd). Known as the Newbattle Collieries Railway, the locomotives were marked with 'Newbattle Collieries'. No 3, a Andrew Barclay, Sons and Co, survives in preservation at the Lady Victoria Colliery.
