This is a station on the Caledonian Railway [Preserved] which runs from Bridge of Dun to Brechin. The station was formerly on the Strathmore main line between Perth and Aberdeen via Forfar [2nd].
At the west end of the station the Aberdeen Railway lines to Brechin and Glasterlaw (and Forfar [2nd], Perth, Stirling and Glasgow Buchanan Street) divided.
The station consisted of an island platform and through platform. The down platform building, which was canopied on all sides, has been removed but the up building remains with a canopy. There was a bay platform on the southbound platform, for trains to the south.
After closure of the main line in 1967, the station reduced to a single line running down the branch face of the island platform. The main station building, and its canopy, survived. The goods only branch from Kinnaber Junction to Brechin via Bridge of Dun closed in 1981.
In preservation much track has been relaid. The remaining station building has been restored. The goods shed from Nairn has been relocated to the station, now placed at the west end on the north side of the line. Bridge of Dun is now the eastern terminus of the line as, unfortunately, with closure the line east via Dubton to Kinnaber Junction was lifted.
The original layout (really just the main line platforms with the junction to the west) was rebuilt in 1893. The branch to Brechin was on the north side of the east/north bound platform, converted into an island. At the east end of the branch line (a loop) was a sand drag to protect the main line from runaways running downhill from Brechin. Also at the east end of the island platform there was a considerable water tank. The original signal box was replaced with a north and south box. The north box was at the east end between the main lines and island platform line. The south box was in the 'V' of the junction at the west end. The north box was subsumed by the south box in 1935. The remaining box closed with the closure to passengers in 1967.
Car parking is available at the site.
