Description

This station was a terminus. Also known as Montrose East. It was the terminus of the 1848 Aberdeen Railway branch from Dubton and was approached from the north east, the line going from Montrose turning first north and then north west to reach Dubton. (The main line of the Aberdeen Railway was extended north to Portlethen in 1849.)

There was a single platform on the north side of the terminating line. This platform later gained a bay at the east end, on the north side (probably for Bervie trains). The passenger station was substantially rebuilt in 1864 with a larger building (by John Willett) which had a trainshed over the line. The centre part of the building is of two storeys with side wings of a single storey. The road entry was from the south side of Railway Place and the station had a forecourt.

To the south of the passenger station was a large goods yard. To the south of this was a line which ran to Montrose Grain Store, Montrose Wet Dock, several shipyards and Montrose Harbour. To the north was Montrose [CR] Timber Yard.

There was a signal box at the station throat, on the south side of the alignment.

All these lines were approached from the Dubton direction. Not far north on that line was Broomhill Junction for the line to Inverbervie (1865) and, later, also the junction for Montrose (North British Railway) (1881 goods 1883 passengers).

The line to the harbour was met by the North British Railway line (1881) in the west of the harbour.

The station closed to passengers in 1934 and the box was closed. The approach from Dubton closed between Dubton and Broomfield Junction in 1963. The Inverbervie line closed in 1966.

Until 1967, when it closed completely, the station could be reached through Montrose Harbour or by reversal at Broomfield Junction.

The area of the extensive sidings at this station is now largely a housing estate. The station building remains as a retirement home but its extensive trainshed was removed and has replaced with a tasteful canopy. The building has been stone-cleaned. The station was closed in preference to the other station in Montrose which was on the Dundee to Aberdeen main line rather than the terminus of a short branch.
