Opened on the Singer Deviation (North British Railway).
Description
This is a two platform station with shelters on the platforms. It replaced Kilbowie [1st] on the original, now closed, alignment to the south. It originally had station buildings with full length canopies on the platforms and a booking office on Kilbowie Road at its east end. The new station directly adjoined the factory on its north side, it was built to serve it and the local area.
To enable expansion of the Singer Works the route of the former Glasgow, Dumbarton and Helensburgh Railway was closed to public traffic, becoming works sidings, and the Singer Deviation (North British Railway) opened around the north of the factory along with the new Singer station.
The works was immediately to the south of the station and was served both by the station and Kilbowie [1st], on the original alignment, which became a private multi platform terminus.

Works name given to areaThe name Singer is now so firmly associated with the station and surroundings that it is easy to forget this was the name of a factory, not the area itself. Perhaps the station name should have reverted to Kilbowie on closure of the works. |
