ScotRail has today (Tuesday 30 July) marked the 35th anniversary of the Polmont rail disaster by laying a wreath at the station in memory of those who lost their lives.

Thirteen people died and dozens more were injured in the tragic event on Monday 30 July 1984, when a rush hour service from Edinburgh to Glasgow derailed near Polmont station.

The accident happened at around 5.55pm when the 5.30pm British Rail Class 47/7 service from Edinburgh Waverley to Glasgow Queen Street struck a cow, derailing the locomotive and all six carriages.

No-one on the train was hurt but there was some disruption to services between Aberdeen and Inverness. [The location was between Elgin and Lhanbryde.]

Eleven cows were killed when they were struck by a train, causing long delays for passengers.
The southbound Great Northern Rail service train struck the animals near Peterborough.
Among those held up were football fans travelling to watch the Premier League match between Burnley and Arsenal.
In a tweet, Great Northern Rail said: 'There are 11 cows confirmed deceased, there are a further 15 missing from the field.'
The company had posted a message on its Twitter feed at about 10:10 BST that all lines were blocked between Peterborough and Huntingdon 'due to cattle on the railway'. [From Richard Buckby]
