The second new station for the Northumberland Line has been given the go-ahead “ less than a week since the first.North Tyneside Council have granted planning permission for a station at Northumberland Park “ which will be built alongside the current Metro station near Backworth.It follows the announcement that Ashington Station became the first of the new stations to get the green light.

The planned re-opening of the Northumberland Line between Newcastle and Ashington has moved a step forward, after Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced £34m in funding to progress the scheme. The announcement by the Department for Transport gives the go-ahead to reintroduce a regular rail passenger service between Ashington and central Newcastle, with several stops in between, by 2024. The money will pay for preparatory work, including land acquisition, detailed design work and early site works.
The project will upgrade 18 miles of track, open six new stations, three new footbridges and new signal locations. The whole scheme is projected to deliver economic benefits of up to £470m. (Permalink) Ashington Newcastle Northumberland Line |

A number of changes to the proposed £162million Northumberland Line have resulted in a fresh report being lodged as part of the planning process. Also known as the Ashington, Blyth and Tyne Line, the project seeks to restore passenger services in the south-east of the county, connecting to Newcastle Central. The target is for trains to start running in early 2023. The stations would be at Ashington, Bedlington, Blyth Bebside, Newsham, Seaton Delaval and the existing Metro station at Northumberland Park, which will require new rail platforms and pedestrian access.
