The estimated £4.8bn cost of HS2s endangered Euston terminus could balloon further unless the government becomes clear what it is trying to achieve, the public accounts committee has warned. In a highly critical report, MPs on the committee said the Department for Transport (DfT) was yet to establish the design and expectations for the station against what it was willing to spend, despite spending more than eight years planning and designing the London terminus.

Avanti West Coast was handed millions of pounds of taxpayer-funded bonuses for a period in which it was Britain's worst train operator for delays, according to Labour party analysis. The analysis, which used Department for Transport (DfT) figures published on Thursday, found the company was awarded the highest possible rating for operational performance and customer satisfaction between 1 April and 18 September last year.

The Tyne and Wear Metro is to receive a further £7.3m from the Government to support its services while customer numbers continue to recover. The Department for Transport (DfT) confirmed the funding for light rail and bus operators today, Monday 4 April. Nexus, the public body which owns and manages Metro, said that the extra financial support was welcome amid a gradual recovery in the number of customers journeys on the Metro network. The funding will be used to cover Metros running costs through to October while fare revenue continues to be affected by the impact of Covid-19.

Only a quarter of the government officials responsible for cancelling HS2 to Yorkshire and downgrading plans for Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) actually live in the north of England and rely on the regions sub-par trains. Department for Transport finds rail operator did not declare more than £25m of historical taxpayer funding. The government is taking over the running of Southeastern railway services from Go-Ahead after discovering a serious breach of the franchise agreement. The transport secretary, Grant Shapps, said an investigation by the Department for Transport found that since October 2014 Southeastern had not declared more than £25m of historical taxpayer funding that should have been returned, and described this as a serious breach of the franchise agreements good faith obligation.
