Scotrail has been instructed to review Fife Circle services following demand for 'much-needed improvements'. Annabelle Ewing, SNP MSP for the Cowdenbeath constituency, which includes Rosyth, Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay, hopes that 'lessons are learned from current performance' during the next phase of the operator's 'Fit for the Future' scheme.

Proposals to reconnect a Scottish port with freight ferry services to Europe could hinge on making rail freight part of the mix. That's the message from stakeholders seeking to establish a direct link between Rosyth on the east coast of Scotland and Zeebrugge on the west coast of Belgium.

A ferry service between Rosyth and Zeebrugge is due to commence in May 2002. The service will be operated by Superfast Ferries. At this stage connecting railway freight or passenger services are not planned. Rosyth's port does have a railway depot, but the connection to the main line faces north.
