Grantown-on-Spey East: The late-running 10.10 Speyside trip freight from Aviemore heads out of Grantown-on-Spey East into the block section to Ballindalloch on Thursday 11th April 1968. While most distilleries were deliberately located adjacent or close to the railway, by the 1960s it was becoming increasingly hard for rail to compete with the flexibility of the modern lorry and the expansion of the trunk road network. Rail was volume-hungry, but most distilleries generated only a handful of full loads daily. Seven months later, this train was history.

The original train loco had failed and this replacement had been sent all the way from Perth. Following the withdrawal of passenger services in 1965, Grantown was the first block post and crossing loop east of Aviemore, but with one train a day in each direction any such crossing must have been an unusual event. Sudbury [2nd]: On Thursday 23rd April 1953 two workmen were busy at Sudbury station updating the running in boards. Their job was to replace the pre-nationalisation signs with the blue enamel versions that identified the station as being BR Eastern Region. Just as they were fixing one of the new boards in place (the one in this photo, pictured 23 years later), they decided to leave their names and the date penciled on a piece of adhesive tape behind the enamel nameplate for posterity. Their note saw the light of day again at the next resigning of the station in 1980. No doubt the workmen, Mr R. Pleasance and Mr P.J.Pullard, would have been pleased to know that their “message in a bottle†was still afloat well into the 21st century.
Cavendish: When the line between Sudbury and Great Shelford was closed in March 1967, the first station building to be demolished, just a few months later, was that at Cavendish. The crossing keeper's house and some of the platform survived, however. London Road Tunnel: View towards Glasgow's the new velodrome in April 2011. The road has been lifted to show the steel beams that spanned London Road adjacent the the ventilation shaft. You can just make out the 6 deep brickwork of the Tunnel in the foreground.
Carlisle: Confusion at Carlisle station on 11 April as the 11.51 Carlisle to Leeds train is relocated from platform 6 to platform 2 to be formed by a 3 car service led by 153332 - with Whitehaven shown as the destination. Hopefully it was changed prior to departure - I would have waited longer to confirm this if it had not been so wet!

Despite its remote location it has been provided with one of the C.I.S. displays which are currently being rolled out at stations along the Heart of Wales line. See image [[43677]]
Warton: Large Logo Brush 4 No. 47580 nears Carnforth with the Compass Tours Roses Express from Barrow to York on 11 April. At Carnforth the Class 47 handed over to 46115 Scots Guardsman for the next leg via Preston and Copy Pit.

West Maitland Street: Engineers in Edinburgh's West Maitland Street on 11 April 2012 have unearthed this 'linear feature' - surely a part of the old tramway system - and are busy removing it. Not rails, as might appear, but troughs.
Preston: 47580 County of Essex waits at platform 5 of Preston on 11 April 2012 to haul the Compass Tours 'Roses Express' back to Barrow in Furness. The tour had returned from York using ex LMS 4-6-0 No 46115 Scots Guardsman on the leg to and from Preston. See image [[38381]]

Melrose: Platform view east at Melrose Station on 11 April 2013. Wouldn't this make a wonderful terminus for the Borders Railway....
Preston: The last mainline registered Class 87 being towed south for probably the last time on 11 April 2013. 87002, which had been performing ice-breaking duties based at Carlisle during the past few months, was photographed being hauled south through Preston station by 47245. See image [[16478]]

Haymarket: The 12.41 Edinburgh - Milngavie meets the 11.18 Glasgow Central - Edinburgh at Haymarket station. View west over platforms 3 and 4 on 11 April 2014 with works nearing completion.
Marsden: The hourly Huddersfield to Manchester stopping service rolls in to the third platform at unstaffed Marsden, just near the summit of the climb to Standedge. The two main line platforms are to the left but 156440 is on the bi-directional loop line. To the right of the train is a building on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal (re-opened in 2001), which also climbs to the Standedge tunnels alongside the railway. See image [[22347]]
Edinburgh Waverley: Looking east along the car park on the south side of Waverley station on 11 April, just as 380104 runs into platform 8 with the 11.27 ex-North Berwick. Already occupying the west end of the same platform is 334029 awaiting its departure time with the 12.07 for Milngavie.
Edinburgh Waverley: The east end of Waverley looking across the car park in the sunshine on 11 April 2014. The stabled sleeper locomotives are 67021 and 90039.
Haymarket: Part of the major works carried out during construction of the new Haymarket Interchange between 2012 and 2014. This view west from Dalry Road on 11 April 2014 shows the works compound at the east end of platforms 2 & 3.
Edinburgh Waverley: The eastern end of Waverley 'sub' platforms 8 & 9, seen from the car park in April 2014. On the left is the rear of the 12.07 service to Milngavie, the remaining 5 coaches of which are occupying platform 8(W). Which is just as well, since the 12.00 arrival from North Berwick is currently approaching platform 8(E) behind the camera. While there is only one island platform located outside the station's south wall there are two separate access stairways visible in the photograph. That on the far right was built hard against the wall in 2006 to provide access to the new platform 10, located on the other side see image [[62457]].
Edinburgh Waverley: The renovated Market Street entrance to Waverley station on 11 April 2014, with steel and glass construction predominating. The theme is continued along the canopies covering platforms 8 & 9 and the stairway link to the station car park.
Edinburgh Waverley: The south entrance to Waverley on 11 April 2014, looking out across Market Street, with the steps of Fleshmarket Close visible through the arch on the right. The major works carried out in and around the station during 2012/2013 transformed what had previously become something of a gloomy gateway. See image [[65343]].
Haymarket [Tram]: Now just a normal part of the day-to-day traffic on the city streets. An Edinburgh tram passes the Haymarket stop on 11 April 2014 during a test run to York Place - without turning a head.
Edinburgh Waverley: The eastern section of the new canopy over Waverley sub platforms 8 and 9 on 11 April 2014. View back towards the stairway linking the car park and the cross-station walkway. See image [[8347]]
Tottenham Court Road [EL]: Behind this hoarding at Tottenham Court Road, in the heart of central London, works are taking place to enlarge the station (currently served by the LU Central and Northern Lines) for Crossrail, seen here on 11th April 2014. Crossrail should have opened in December 2018, put back to autumn 2019 and then put back again to either late 2020 or early 2021. But with this terrible coronavirus pandemic, there is no telling now when the line will actually open.
Carlisle: The 25th Anniversary of the Settle & Carlisle 'reprieve' was marked by a DRS-worked special train over the route on 11 April 2014 and celebrated by (amongst many others) Michael Portillo at Carlisle and Paul Salveson at Leeds.
Haymarket: Full House! View west over Haymarket station on 11 April 2014. The train leaving platform 4 (left) is the 12.41 Edinburgh - Milngavie, at 3 is the 11.18 Glasgow Central - Edinburgh via Shotts, drawing into 2 is the 12.17 Newcraighall - Glenrothes with Thornton, while the 11.51 reverse working has just arrived at platform 1.
Edinburgh Waverley: The sub platforms at Waverley (now numbered 8 and 9) with the recently completed new canopy framed by a span of the North Bridge. View north east across Market Street on 11 April 2014. See image [[7446]]
Edinburgh Waverley: The view east from Waverley Bridge showing the new canopy over the 'sub' platforms. The structure is echoed in the refurbished Market Street station entrance as well as the Edinburgh Council HQ in the background. Hiding in the shadows alongside platform 8 is the 12.07 service to Milngavie. Note the attractive varitone brown cladding. See image [[17536]]
Princes Street [Tram]: 'Stand aside I say...' Buses, cars, cyclists and pedestrians are brought to a halt at the east end of Princes Street on 11 April 2014 as an Edinburgh Tram emerges from South St Andrew Street to sweep majestically around the curve on its way to the airport. 'Ping!'
Princes Street [Tram]: An Airport bound Edinburgh tram at the east end of Princes Street during a test run on 11 April 2014 - complete with familiar backdrop.
Sible and Castle Hedingham: The authentic image of an early 1960s country branch line, as lovingly re-created on the Colne Valley Railway in April 2015. Unfortunately, that feeling of authenticity had just grown to include impending closure, tracklifting and demolition of the buildings. The previous month, the society had learned that they had to leave this site and find another. Closure was set for 1st January 2016, the 54th anniversary of the cessation of the original Colne Valley passenger service
Broomhill Junction: Ivatt Class 2 No.46512 passes the site of Broomhill Junction on the Strathspey Railway on 11 April 2015 with the early afternoon train for Broomhill.
Kincardine: Freightliner 66512 nears Kincardine with thirty PCAs of fly ash from Aberthaw Power Station in South Wales to the breeze-block plant at Longannet, whose local supply has dried up... The first of what should be a weekly train. The previous flow was in the opposite direction, to Westbury Cement Works in the 1990s I think.
Wemyss Bay: Historic posters revealed at Wemyss Bay during recent renovations.
Farington: DCR Class 56 no.56303 heads south with former DRS 47813 and 37601 at Farington south of Preston on a Carlisle to Leicester move on 11 April 2017.
Hest Bank: Another one fresh out of the box. Two 88s worked in multiple on 11th April on a return test run from Carlisle to Crewe. Seen here at Hest Bank on the return trip 88002 Prometheus leads 88001 Revolution.
Braemar: Amazing the things you come across during a walk in the woods... see image [[40737]]
Forton: After working northwards light engine DCR liveried 56303 returned from Carlisle with Brush Type 4 47813 and EE Type 3 37601 on 11th April 2017. Both of these have been sold by DRS recently. DRS branding had been removed from both locos and they were being hauled to Leicester depot, seen here at Forton near Garstang.
Luxulyan: The 16.21 to Newquay arrives at Luxulyan on 11th April 2017. At least one of the coaches was about to be filled by a large party of ramblers. [Ref query 1079]
Hest Bank: DCR liveried 56303 heads light engine from Derby to Carlisle on 11th April 2017. It later returned south with two ex-DRS locomotives heading for Leicester See image [[59026]].
Treffy Viaduct: The wonderful Treffry tramway viaduct and aqueduct near Luxulyan station in April 2017.
Addiewell: New footbridge at Addiewell, raised for electrification, seen on 11th April 2018.
Shrubhill Tram Depot: I'm not sure what an engine yard is but I'm guessing whoever named this development on the depot site thought it had something to do with trams. The third 'rail 'in the middle suggests cable tram track; I wonder if this was deliberate?
Cardross: New sleeper coaches at Cardross, returning from a trial run to Arrochar and Tarbet.
Livingston South: A view of the all new Livingston South station.
Baillieston: Two impressive cranes, one each side of the railway, working to remove sections of the Muirside Road overbridge as it is cut up in situ at Baillieston station. Unsurprisingly, there is a bus replacement service while the job is in progress.
Cardross: New sleeper coaches approach Cardross on a trial run from Polmadie to Arrochar & Tarbet. A real curiosity on a day when the West Highland is closed south of Crianlarich due to a sink hole between Ardlui and Arrochar & Tarbet.
Cardross: Old and new. A detail shot of the rear of 73971 and a new sleeper coach on a trial run from Polmadie to Arrochar and Tarbet. The cable running from the door and down the side of the coach is presumably part of the measuring equipment.
Galgate: 68017 Hornet brings up the rear of 2C32 Carlisle to Preston passing under Hampson Lane bridge at Galgate on 11th April 2018. On this occasion the train was headed by 68004 Rapid. The daily trip to Preston will cease with the May timetable change when Class 158 Sprinters are being introduced on Barrow trains. Loco hauled will then be confined to the Barrow to Carlisle line.
Hyndland: 320413 enters Hyndland with a Dalmuir train. On the right is the bridge over the former Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway.
Hardengreen Viaduct: A ScotRail 158 southbound on the Borders Railway crosses Hardengreen Viaduct during a bright and sunny morning on 11 April 2019. Passing below on the A7 is the Lothian no 29 bus, providing the competition as far as Gorebridge.
Dumbarton Central: Up on the roof; in the background workmen are repairing the roof of the westbound platforms building.
Euxton Balshaw Lane: New CAF EMU 397003 out on a test run returning to Manchester from Carlisle on 11 April 2019 waiting at a signal on the up slow on the approach to Euxton Balshaw Lane station.

Morrison Street Goods: The Caledonian's Morrison Street Goods was built on a greenfield site. After the depot was closed it became a temporary-looking car park for nearly 50 years. The site is finally getting its first proper buildings - and how. This view is from Morrison Street itself with, like the sign says, Haymarket station ahead.
Little Hulton: Little Hulton station closed in 1954, along with the ex-LNWR line from Bolton Great Moor St, although goods trains passed through for a further six years. The platforms and buildings were removed and the stone work, seen in this April 2021 view towards Bolton from the A6 overbridge, was put in during the conversion of the trackbed to a greenway. A new Little Hulton station has been proposed, but if built will be on the nearby L&YR line between Walkden and Atherton.
White Bear: White Bear, in Adlington (Lancashire), was on the line from Chorley to Wigan and closed in 1960 although traffic passed through for a further ten years. Everything has been swept away, apart from this old building on what would have been the Chorley platform. This has seen service as a cafe for the adjacent canal marina but is presently unused although in very good condition. Modern industrial buildings occupy the rest of the station site. This view towards Boars Head and Wigan in April 2021.
Wylam: A Carlisle to Morpeth train leaves Wylam station (the platforms being on the far side of the level crossing for Eastbound trains). The yellow machinery was there to repair the adjacent road bridge; which originally carried a colliery railway.
South Gosforth: Tyne and Wear Metro upgrades. The ventilation arrangements at South Gosforth depot have been greatly improved by demolition works (notice the missing wall). The replacement depot is taking shape to the right of this April 2022 view.
Wylam: 66771 leads a weedkilling train through Wylam station, with 66797 on the other end. This was an out and back from and to Tyne Yard on 11th April 2022. The spray monitoring lights can clearly be seen; but the sprays were turned off as the train passed (West) through the station. This is presumably to avoid spraying passengers (sorry Sir. Thought you were a weed.) I was prewarned of the existence of this train because my DMU from Newky had passed it on the King Edward bridge.
Newcastle Airport: The destination blind tells you what you already know; but the driver is walking down, Im sure he will correct that. The airport terminal buildings can be seen on the right.
Wylam Viaduct: Hagg Bank bridge across the Tyne, seen from the East in April 2022. I had visited this location before, after dark; quite exciting, but not good for photography.
Regent Centre: A unit for South Hylton arriving at Regent Centre station on 11th April 2022. The gents in the mauve jackets were performing additional ticket checks.
