Doncaster: A4 Pacific 60029 Woodcock runs north through Doncaster on 21 July 1962 with the 7.51am Holloway - Edinburgh Waverley Anglo-Scottish Car Carrier.
Doncaster: The appearance of 60117 Bois Roussell appears to have delighted one of the platform souls at Doncaster station on 21 July 1962. The Copley Hill A1 Pacific (named after the winner of the 1938 Derby) runs south through the centre road with a Saturday Leeds Central - Kings Cross express.
Doncaster: Gresley K3 2-6-0 no 61805 passes through Doncaster on 21 July 1962 with an up freight.

Bridge Street Junction: Shortly after leaving Glasgow Central on 21 July 1964 Fairburn 2-6-4 tank no 42242 has passed through Bridge Street Junction with a train for Wemyss Bay.
Chaumont: On re-discovering this slide of a couple of derelict SNCF Class 230B 4-6-0 locomotives, taken in 1967, it occurred to me to investigate whether one of them might have co-starred with Burt Lancaster in the 1964 film 'The Train'. But the one in the foreground is 230B728 and I don't have a record of the other number. The film features 230B517, with several other elderly French locomotives, in some superb railway sequences (to my mind eclipsed only by the even more epic sequences in Jean Renoir's 1938 'La Bete Humaine'). I cannot recall the exact location of the photograph but it was somewhere near Chaumont.
Chaumont: SNCF 2-8-2 141P132 photographed at the depot in Chaumont, eastern France. I seem to have no records at all regarding this shot, indeed I cannot even recall going to the depot! However, we did drive through the area in July 1967 and, comparing my few photographs with published shots, I am sure the venue was Chaumont. Something that maybe should not have been left to smoulder is producing a lot of smoke around the cab. Perhaps it was something to do with the mechanical stoker these locomotives were fitted with.
Wath: Knottingley resident No. 1892 leaves the east end of Wath Yard with a rake of HAA coal hoppers in July 1971.The wagons appear to be empty so they have probably come over the Pennines from Fiddlers Ferry Power Station and are now being tripped to a Yorkshire colliery for reloading.
Wath: On a hazy Dearne Valley morning in the summer of 1971, Brush Type 2s Nos. 5822+5807 depart eastwards from Wath Yard past Wath Cental Junction with a coal train on the former GCR line to Mexborough and Doncaster. The curve to the right of the leading loco formed a connection to the Swinton and Knottingley Joint at Dearne Junction, just south of Bolton-on-Dearne.
Beighton Junction: First series 'Peak' D9 Snowdon has taken the chord line from Beighton Jn (on the ex MR 'Old Road' between Chesterfield and Rotherham) to the ex GCR Retford - Sheffield Victoria line at Woodhouse East Jn, so its destination may well be Rotherwood Sidings. That being the case its load of Nottinghamshire(?) coal is likely to be bound for the west side of the Pennines via the Woodhead Route.
Beighton Junction: Class 47 no 1879 on a northbound train of oil tanks, thought to be returning empty to Tees-side, on the Midland 'Old Road' at Killamarsh in July 1971. The train is passing a pair of class 20s heading an unbraked train of 16t coal wagons south on the up line.
Wath: 6733 leaves Wath Yard heading east with a partially fitted train of assorted loaded coal wagons. When this photograph was taken in 1971 the yard had less than 20 years of operational life remaining, with complete closure coming in 1988 along with the demise of the last of the local collieries.
Wombwell Main Junction: E26029 and E26016 pass Wombwell Main Junction with a Wath Yard to Fiddlers Ferry Power Station MGR coal train in July 1971. There would have been another pair of class 76s assisting in the rear for the ascent of Worsborough Bank.
Wath: Brush Type 4 No 1547 passes Wath Central signal-box on the eastern approach to Wath Yard in July 1971 with a lowly class 9 trip working of 16T mineral wagons. A bit of a comedown from the previous occasion I had photographed the loco just over a year earlier passing through Larbert on an up Motorail service see image [[35785]].
Wombwell Main Junction: A recently out-shopped class 76, no E26036, approaches Wombwell Main Junction between Worsborough Bank and Wath Yard with a mixed freight from the Manchester area in July 1971.
Wombwell Main Junction: E26031, still in green livery, approaches Wombwell Main Junction from the west with empty coal hoppers in the summer of 1971. The train is returning to the South Yorkshire coalfield to collect another load.
Bakewell: The 1862 station at Bakewell, on the one-time MR main line through the Peak District, had closed to passengers in March 1967 and to freight in July 1968. Four years after complete closure, the station forecourt was suffering the ignominy of use as a coal merchant's yard.
Saltburn: Main entrance to Saltburn station in July 1978.
Cressing: A Witham – Braintree service calls at Cressing on 21st July 1979. Class 308 EMUs had been working the branch since electrification in the autumn of 1977, sometimes alternating with Class 302 and 305 units. Their successors were Class 312 and 321 EMUs.

York: View north from the old excursion platform at Holgate Junction, just south of York station, in July 1980. 46040 has just taken the station avoiding line at the junction with a load of tanks, while 40184 is held at signals waiting to join the main line.
Roy Bridge: 37410 is seen heading west below Cille Choirill church and graveyard with the 1223 Mossend to Corpach. It will shortly arrive at Roy Bridge.
Garelochhead: Ah, the red crunchy gravel of a WHL platform, like the approach to a country house. A Glasgow service pulls up at Garelochhhead in July 1997.
Cupar: An Edinburgh service comes to a stop at Cupar in July 1998. The Class 158 is still in the generic Regional Railways livery from British Rail days.
Tain: 37520 waits for Royal Scotsman passengers to return from a distillery visit before heading south from Tain on 21 July 2000.

Riccarton Junction: Looking from the bottom of the Stationmasters' garden at Riccarton Junction in July 2004. One wonders how often the 'boss' (or bosses) headed down to a similar point to cast a watchful eye over their domain over the years.
Camden Road: A Trafford Park - Felixstowe container train arrives at Camden Road Junction on 21 July 2005 behind Freightliner 90016. The train is coming off the direct freight-only link from the WCML at Primrose Hill Tunnel see image [[53461]] as opposed to the 'branch' via Gospel Oak used by class 313 units operating the NLL passenger services at that time.
White City: An eastbound Central Line train for Hainhault approaching White City station in July 2005. Note the train appears to be approaching 'wrong line'- a historic quirk from the days when Central Line trains were 'looped' at the former Wood Lane terminus, just south of here. Nowadays 'wrong line' operation continues from a site west of the old terminus, through White City station, before reverting to the conventional arrangement via a surface flyover between here and East Acton station.
Camden Road: One of the Silverlink Class 313 units approaches Camden Road on a Richmond - Stratford service in July 2005. The train is coming off the 'branch' from Willesden Junction High Level via Gospel Oak. Camden Road was one of four traction current changeover points for 313 units on the North London Line at that time. For a close up of the sign see image [[5083]].

Old Oak Common: Part of the carriage sidings at Old Oak Common, seen on a quiet mid-week afternoon in July 2005. The locomotive manoeuvring empty stock in the centre of the picture is First Great Western Sleeper liveried class 57 no 57605 Totnes Castle.
North Pole Depot: First Great Western Sleeper liveried class 57 locomotive no 57605 Totnes Castle ambles past North Pole eurostar depot in July 2005 with empty stock destined for Paddington. The nose of a eurostar can just be seen through one of the open shed doors.
Camden Road: Freightliner 90044 runs west through Camden Road station on the North London Line with a container train from Felixstowe in the summer of 2005. The route is set for the direct freight only line which joins the WCML just east of Primrose Hill Tunnel see image [[53461]] where the train will head north towards Manchester and its ultimate destination at Trafford Park FLT. The route to the right just beyond Camden Road Junction box is the NLL route to Richmond via Gospel Oak and Willesden Junction High Level.

Poplar: View east from the end of platform 4 at Poplar station on the Docklands Light Railway in July 2005. The train is on the flyover heading for Canning Town, crossing over the lower level route, which is about to turn north towards Devon's Road and on to Stratford. Below left stands part of the DLR's Poplar maintenance depot and stabling sidings. Much of the surroundings still has the feel of a massive building site.
Down Street: The former Piccadilly Line tube station in Down Street, Mayfair, seen here on 21 July 2005, some 73 years after closure. Opened in 1907 the station suffered due to the proximity of Hyde Park Corner and Green Park stations and closed in 1932. Down Street's claim to fame was in hosting several meetings of Churchill's war cabinet during WW2.
Camden Road: Polite reminder to drivers on the North London Line at Camden Road in July 2005. See image [[6226]]

Camden Road: The 1850 North London Line station on Camden Road, standing alongside the rail bridge over the A503 in July 2005. Note the original name Camden Town (changed 55 years previously) still prominent along the top of the building. The name Camden Town is currently applied to the LU Northern Line station located 400m south west of here.
Camden Road: Westbound containers from Felixstowe destined for the Midlands rumble across the bridge spanning the A503 and through Camden Road station in July 2005. The route is part of the heavily used inter-regional freight corridor utilising the North London Line. The locomotive is GBRf 66716.

Wandsworth Road: A morning London - Paris 'eurostar' approaching Wandsworth Road station, Battersea, on 21 July 2005. The last of the Battersea gasholders and the unmistakeable outline of Battersea Power Station can be seen in the middle distance through the haze... not to mention the last word in green corrugated iron sheds! Part of Factory Junction box can be seen on the extreme left.
Wandsworth Road: A Brussels - Waterloo eurostar passes a 'South Eastern' emu on a Victoria - Orpington service just north of Wandsworth Road station in July 2005. To the left is Factory Junction giving access to the LSWR routes and the West London Line via Clapham Junction.
Kensington Olympia: EWS 66250 with an evening PW train passing north through Kensington Olympia on 21 July 2005. Amongst the vehicles is a wagon proclaiming Arsenal FC as Kings of North London. My own slightly mischievous cries of 'Come on you Spurrrrs...' went unheeded by the train crew, but did succeed in turning one or two heads on Kensington High Street.
Wandsworth Road: A Paris - London eurostar snakes along the urban viaducts through Battersea in July 2005 using the 'old route' to Waterloo International. Photographed using a long lens from the footbridge at Wandsworth Road station.
Factory Junction: Good places not to have a derailment No.47 - Factory Junction. The destination blind of unit 456024 ex-Victoria shows London Bridge via Peckham Rye, as the South London Line shuttle service passes through the junction on a murky July morning in 2005. See image [[6570]].
Poplar: View west from Poplar station on the Docklands Light Railway in the summer of 2005, with a train leaving the platform destined for Tower Gateway. At the upper left of the photograph, on the other side of West India Dock Road, another DLR train is standing at the platform of West India Quay station with a service to Stratford.
White City: The LU White City station on the Central Line, seen here looking east across Wood Lane in July 2005. The station, which opened in 1947, replaced the now demolished Wood Lane station, which had been the western terminus of the line (then the Central London Railway) from 1908 until 1920. Note the blue circular plaque to the left of the station canopy, commemorating a Festival of Britain design award. The station is also notable in featuring right-hand running see image [[34254]].
Dalston Kingsland: EWS 66142 brings the 15.50 Purfleet - Wembley freight through Dalston Kingsland station on the North London Line on 21 July 2005.
Farringdon: View north from the station stairway at Farringdon in the summer of 2005. Up ahead a Metropolitan Line Amersham - Aldgate train is running into platform 1, while over on the left a southbound Thameslink service is about to leave platform 3 on the 'widened lines' with a Bedford - Sutton working.
Dalston Western Junction: A class 313 EMU on a North London Line Richmond - North Woolwich service approaching Western Junction signal box from the Canonbury direction in July 2005. The trackbed of the line down to the now demolished former terminus at Broad Street can be seen on the left. This trackbed has been earmarked as part of the East London Line extension north from Shoreditch, which will join the NLL here. Dalston Kingsland station stands behind the camera see image [[40988]].
Kensington Olympia: A Eurostar runs south ecs through Kensington Olympia on a pleasant July morning in 2005, on its way from North Pole depot to Waterloo. Over on the left a District Line train is getting ready to leave the bay platform on the short trip to High Street Kensington. Note the spare power car bringing up the rear of the Eurostar.
Clapham Junction: Victoria-bound emu 455838 calls at Clapham Junction on 21 July 2005.
Kensington Olympia: Some of the many changes that have taken place at Kensington Olympia in the 35 years or so since image [[37691]] are shown in this photograph taken in July 2005, with an inspection unit standing at platform 2. The sidings and bays on the east side have now gone, with the through tracks reduced from 4 to 3 and a new, shorter, through platform constructed (the old platform now supports the fence). The land released has become a new 'street' standing between the station and Russell Road, consisting of blocks of flats in the 'non-trivial' price category. The former west side bays (the large blue shed and the area beyond), following several years as London's main Motorail terminal, now ironically house 'Olympia Parking'. View is north towards Willesden Junction with Kensington High Street behind the camera.
Poplar: A Lewisham - Stratford service on the Docklands Light Railway, photographed shortly after leaving platform 2 at Poplar station on 21 July 2005. The flyover, under which the train will shortly pass as it turns north, carries the eastbound DLR route from platform 1 towards Beckton. Part of the DLR's Poplar Depot can be seen on the left.
Camden Road: Freightliner 90016 runs east through the platforms of Camden Road station in the summer of 2005 with containers bound for Felixstowe. The train, which originated from Manchesters Trafford Park Freightliner Terminal, had left the WCML at Camden Junction and travelled via the three quarter mile direct freight-only link to join the North London Line at Camden Road Junction, located just beyond the signal box.
Clapham Junction: Wonder why they did that? No 276. Platform 1 at Clapham Junction, seen looking south west in July 2005. The platform is now closed off with the track lifted. A West London Line Silverlink service for Willesden Junction waits at platform 2.
Poplar: Docklands Light Railway units stabled in the sidings alongside Poplar DLR depot in July 2005.
Clapham Junction: A sudden splash of colour brightens the north end of Clapham Junction on 21 July 2005 in the form of a passing Gatwick Express.
Knightsbridge: 'There's been an incident.' The official statement from police and LU staff at the Hans Crescent entrance to Knightsbridge tube station on the afternoon of 21 July 2005, having arrived there just in time to see the retractable barrier tape being stretched across the entrance. As became apparent later that day there had in fact been 4 incidents, all bombing attempts. These occurred during the space of 19 minutes on trains at Shepherd's Bush, Oval and Warren Street, with a slightly later attack on a no 26 bus in Bethnal Green. Fortunately, in all 4 cases, only the detonators fired, with the bombs themselves failing to explode.
Turnham Green: Piccadilly Line train passing through Turnham Green station on 21 July 2005 en route to Hyde Park Corner where trains were terminating in the aftermath of the bomb explosion at Russell Square 2 weeks earlier.

Turnham Green: Piccadilly Line tube trains about to pass in heavy rain just east of Turnham Green station on 21 July 2005. The temporary eastern terminus of the line at that time was at Hyde Park Corner, following the bombing of a westbound Piccadilly Line train in the tunnel approaching Russell Square station 14 days earlier which resulted in the deaths of 26 people.
Clapham Junction: Welcome indeed! As the sign says - Britain's busiest railway station. Platform scene at Clapham Junction in July 2005, looking north with a Southern Trains service arriving.
Poplar: Scene at Poplar DLR station in July 2005. A Stratford - bound service is approaching the platform while a Lewisham branch train waits on the flyover in the background for the clear into West India Quay station. The transformation of the old London Docklands has been quite staggering - and still it goes on. (PS Anyone remember the Harry Enfield character Loadsamoney?)
Camden Road: Freightliner 90044 passing through the platforms of Camden Road station on 21 July 2005. The containers originated from the Port of Felixstowe and the train has been routed via Stratford, the North London Line and the WCML on its journey to Manchester's Trafford Park terminal.
Dalston Kingsland: One of several similar signs intended for drivers of Silverlink class 313 dual voltage EMUs operating on the North London Line in the summer of 2005. This one is on the westbound platform at Dalston Kingsland station just before Boleyn Road bridge. Because of the mix of traction current supplies on the Richmond - North Woolwich route at that time drivers were required to switch between third rail and overhead systems at four locations along the route (others being Hackney Wick, Camden Road and Acton Central). See image [[6230]]
West Hampstead: Entrance to the 1888 West Hampstead (Hampstead Junction Railway) station on West End Lane in July 2005 see image [[5248]].

Invershin: The dilapidated station building at Invershin in July 2008. Although it is not fenced off from the platform,it appears to be in private ownership.
Bay Horse: Recent Down line tracklaying at Bay Horse has resulted in the removal of the emergency crossovers there. Contractors are still in the former goods yard, which also contains a 25kv feeder station, hence the intricate catenary. Although on this date there was still a temporary speed restriction on the Down line the Pendolino is on the Up and heading for Euston at full speed.

Glen Douglas Halt: Spot the train! High above Loch Long a Sprinter is about to turn inland to run through Glen Douglas. This photograph illustrates the height gained by trains heading south from Arrochar and Tarbet. By comparison the A814 road runs along the shoreline. When the line was built materials were delivered by puffer to the shoreline and taken up by aerial ropeways. View from the west side of the loch.

Whalley: Northern Sprinter 150143 approaches Whalley from Clitheroe on a Manchester Victoria service. Behind the train is the Sidings Business Park that occupies the old goods yard. Sixteen years after re-opening the Ribble Valley line continues to enjoy good levels of passenger use and is now officially a Community Railway.
Whalley: The ornate arch at the street level entrance to Whalley, proudly displaying Lancashire's Red Rose, was created when the station reopened to passengers in 1994 after being closed for 32 years. Half way up the stairs is a white tiled subway under the line that allows access to the other platform. Behind the camera the low bridge joins directly on to the 48 arch Whalley viaduct See image [[20585]].

Newtown: Who knows what could be on the far side of this footbridge? (see image [[26073]]). In my case, a walk, a bus, and a hitch-hiked car ride - truly an intermodal journey.
Welshpool [1st]: The old station at Welshpool in July 2011 - now a shopping centre, albeit with a well kept roof. The fence separates the railway from the bypass. See image [[35062]]

Birmingham Curzon Street: A future stop for HS2? They'll have to take the boards off the windows first... see image [[22382]]
Birmingham International: The 'maglev' shuttle at Birmingham Airport See image [[19857]] was replaced by a pair of cable-hauled driverless pods - one blue, one green. As can be seen on the track on the right, the cables run over many pulleys. This gives the strange result that the sound of moving parts is audible whenever the pods are in motion, whether you can see them or not! Despite the legend on the side of the pod, it doesn't actually go all the way to Australia..
Birmingham International: The styling of the Southbound Pendolino {the 19.20 to Euston} blends in well with this starkly modern station serving the NEC and Birmingham Airport.

Ansdell and Fairhaven: The Open Golf Championship 2012 saw trains on the Blackpool South branch terminating at Ansdell, which allowed a half hourly service to be provided to Preston. Here a large number of passengers emerges from one of the two 4-car Sprinters in use and makes their way to the adjacent course entrance. See image [[22394]] for a similar view of the station prior to its spruce up for the Open.
Woodacre Crossing: Running like the proverbial well oiled sewing machine 46233 heads south at Woodacre on 21st July 2012 with the returning Cumbrian Mountain Express. The mainly maroon rake of coaches nicely complemented the green 'Duchess'.
Czestochowa: A southbound minerals train runs through Czestochowa in July 2012 hauled by CTL Logistics Co-Co 182-058. Built by Skoda in mid-1960s, the Freight locomotive has a maximum speed of 90kmh.

Czestochowa: A train for Katowice and Gliwice about to depart from Czestochowa on 21 July 2012. The train belongs to KS (Koleje Slaskie) a private operator. The unit is, believe it or not, an EN 57, the same class as photographed at Kracow the previous day see image [[39759]], but as modernised. The Chairman of the Scottish Association for Public Transport looks on.
Euxton Junction: 46233 Duchess of Sutherland joins the WCML at Euxton Junction whilst working the 'Cumbrian Mountain Express' from Crewe to Carlisle via Manchester and the S&C on 21 July 2012.

Troon Harbour: Door of an electrical cabinet of the G&SWR which was sometime situated at the powerhouse at Troon Harbour see image [[43778]]. The item is currently in the care of the ARPG at Dunaskin awaiting refurbishnent. Plates, Signs and notices.
Dunblane: DRS 37425+37423, with 37409 on the tail, roar through Dunblane on 21 July with a Northern Belle empty stock movement from Aberdeen to Crewe.
Barnwell: The former wayside station at Barnwell is now adjacent to the Oundle bypass, which is built on the trackbed. I have driven past the station maybe six times without noticing its presence - I must have been concentrating on driving! The bench in the porch carries the lettering: GWR FARES.
Dunblane: 170419 arrives at Dunblane on 21 July with 15.45 Glasgow Queen Street - Aberdeen.
Oundle: Looking past a rather less overgrown gatepost near Oundle station see image [[44393]], the trackbed to Peterborough is conveniently marked across the field by tractor wheel tracks.
Wigsthorpe: Looking south west towards Thrapston on the Peterborough to Northampton line, a little South of Barnwell, in July 2013 see image [[43909]]. This must have been a wonderful viewpoint in steam days. The colours remind me of Kodachrome.
Dunblane: DRS 37409 roars through Dunblane on 21 July on the rear of a Northern Belle empty stock movement from Aberdeen to Crewe. At the front of the train are DRS 37425 and 37437.

Dalmeny Junction: In the final week of Winchburgh diversions, 158733 on a local from Fife waits to follow a reversing Dunblane-Edinburgh train at Dalmeny Junction on 21 July 2015. View from the 0850 Edinburgh-Dunblane which is itself in the process of reversing.
Callander Ticket Platform: Looking east from Bracklin Road bridge along the course of the Callander & Oban railway on 21 July 2015. To the right, beyond the new house, was the site of Callander (Old) Station, later a goods yard. The ticket platform, for the Oban route's Callander station, was located closer to the camera.
Silkstone Junction: A short section of points assembly is still in position immediately adjacent to the rear boundary fence to a site on the Claycliffe Industrial Estate at Barugh on the west side of Barnsley, as come across during an off the beaten track walk whilst our extensively used 2003 MG saloon, with 300,000 Km on the clock, was gaining an MOT pass. The line ran on a short embankment from Silkstone Junction on the Barnsley to Horbury Junction section of line, approx 100m away to left of view, to serve a chemical works that previously stood on the site of what is now a steel reinforcing mesh manufacturing site, whilst a line turned west to run via Barnby Bridge Junction to access Stanhope and Higham Collieries. See image [[56220]]
Lairg: Lairg, as seen from the A836 level crossing to the north of the station. Beyond the STOP boards the trailing connection to the oil terminal, still served by a weekly train, can just be seen See image [[16427]].
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: Checking the measurements while fitting datum plates at the rebuilt platform 1 at Queen Street High Level in late July 2016.
Cowlairs Incline: Installation of signalling equipment at the north portal of the Queen Street High Level Tunnel on 21st July 2016. Just visible in the highlighted area is the tunnel's OHLE conductor bar recently installed as part of the EGIP electrification work.
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: It has been so long since trains have called at Queen Street High Level that a giant spider has started to spin a web across platforms 2,3,4 and 5. Actually, Incy Wincy is spinning a yarn there – headspans are beginning to appear at the north end of the rebuilt platforms.
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: Work to refit barriers taking place on 21st July 2016. The resurfaced concourse to the right hides the extensive preparations for extending platforms 2,3,4 & 5 southwards towards George Square which took place during the closure of the High Level station see image [[55687]].
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: The works at Queen Street seen through the viewing area window on 21st July 2016. To the left, the platform extension preparations see image [[55605]] have been covered up by the temporarily restored concourse and platform barriers are being refitted. Customers who have been treated to a wide variety of construction noises while passing through the station in recent weeks are currently able to enjoy a selection of aromas from the resurfacing work.
Tain: Late evening scene at Tain with DB 66100 and 158704. The 66 was on a long train of empty bogie wagons from Georgemas Junction and running 90 minutes late at this point. It would have a further wait here for the 158 on the 2216hrs Tain to Inverness service to clear the section to Invergordon.
Silkstone Junction: A sylvan setting appears to be the case for this occupation overbridge running below the Barnsley to Horbury Junction section of line to the rear of the Claycliffe Industrial Estate at Barugh to west side of Barnsley. The bridge, BAH2-30, is located some 250m south of Dearne Hall Road over-bridge with Silkstone Junction some 50m north, to left, of view, and is within a former industrial & mining location. The view belies the true surroundings.
Haymarket [Tram]: Tram to Airport approaching Haymarket, on 21st July 2017.
Killiecrankie Viaduct: View of the Pass of Killiecrankie towards 'Soldier's Leap' from Killiecrankie Viaduct, seen from an Edinburgh Waverley to Inverness service, on which my friends and I travelled as far as Aviemore, on the morning of 21st July 2017. Killiecrankie station closed under the Beeching cuts in 1965.
Stockholm Central: Weeds at sleeper arrival platform in Stockholm!
Midge Hall: DRS 68025 moves off from the EKT exchange with the signaller at Midge Hall on 21 July 2017. This was not the normal stock for the Ormskirk to Preston services as it was a Northern Belle charter from London Victoria in connection with the Open Golf at Birkdale. This was the return journey from Ormskirk heading to Preston where the train reversed before heading south to London.
Stockholm Central: A class 460-style Arlanda Express at Stockholm.
Copenhagen Central: Danish IC4 units at Copenhagen Central.
Copenhagen Central: Danish units at Copenhagen main station.
Aviemore: Exterior of Aviemore station on 21st July 2017.
Aviemore: 170453 to Inverness (left), and 170433 to Edinburgh Waverley (right), at Aviemore on 21st July 2017. That's my friend and Edinburgh resident Paul on the right, we were returning from a visit to the Strathspey and Cairngorm Mountain Railways.
Copenhagen Central: Not just in Britain ... rail replacement bus from Copenhagen at Hamburg.
New Lane: On a wet evening, 67020 approaches Crabtree LC between New Lane and Burscough Bridge with a Southport to Euston special charter in connection with the Open Golf at Birkdale. Five blue/grey mark 2s were sandwiched between two chocolate and cream mark 1s. 67005 was on the rear.
Shieling Station: View from ascending Cairngorm Mountain Railway train approaching the tunnel on the final ascent to the Summit station, on 21st July 2017.
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: An Alloa service formed of a four-car 156 awaits its departure time on 21 July 2018. The demolition of buildings in front of the southern end (ahead) has made the station rather brighter.
Philpstoun: Class 365s near Philpstoun seen from the Union Canal towpath.
Hillington East: A Glasgow to Gourock Service calls at Hillington East on 21 July 2018. From this location it is possible to see the platforms of the stations either side. In theory then if your eyes were sharp enough you could see Cardonald from Hillington West and vice-versa...
Hillington East: A Gourock to Glasgow service pulls into Hillie East on 21 July 2018. The track on the left is the central road, sometimes used by passing trains and sometimes not. I'm sure there is a pattern. Yes, I know trains going in opposite directions can't both use it.
Maryhill: An Anniesland to Queen Street service calls at Maryhill on 21 July 2018. This is the only intermediate station with any features. The indefatigable Gaelic translator of station names has rendered this as the equivalent of Mary's Hill when it is pretty well known that Maryhill is named after someone called Mary Hill.
Mosspark: A Paisley Canal to Glasgow service pulls into Mosspark on 21st July 2018. The station was once known as Mosspark West, even though there wasn't another one. A west of Scotland equivalent of Gorgie (East), it seems.
Pollokshields East: A Class 314 enters Pollokshields East on a Neilston service on 21 July 2018. As far as I can see these services are run exclusively by 314s so will have to find something else soon, though timing depends on the Class 385 roll-out.
Shawlands: A Maxwell Park circle service calls at Shawlands on 21 July 2018 in the charge of a doomed Class 314. Note that the second 'via' blind has been abandoned leading to tiny lettering on the remaining one as the route is squashed in.
Ayr: Platform 3 at Ayr is partly closed, due to the unsafe nature of the adjacent hotel building, and there is no access to the concourse. The footbridge to Platform 4 is still open. Seen here on 21st July 2018 - various time scales have been quoted for reopening but about 10 weeks seems the favourite.
Paisley Gilmour Street: Information in the subway at Gilmour Street seen on 21 July 2018. I case you are wondering, Platform 4 is missing because you have already passed it at this point. Although the station has the usual departure screens it retains two updated versions of these simple NTIs (next train indicators). Font fans will notice that they are in TfL's New Johnston lettering. As this is copyright to TfL it suggests they were made by their manufacturers.
Dunblane: Scotrail HST set, led by power car 43148, seen at Dunblane on 21st July 2018
Leyland: A positioning move of steam locos and their support coaches from WCRC Carnforth depot is seen passing Leyland on 21 July 2018. Since the reporting number had suggested ecs I wasn't as prepared as I should have been. Fortunately a friendly nudge from the station staff gave me just enough time to leg it over the footbridge to be able to photograph 37706 hauling 44871 with support coach followed by 45690 Leander with support coach. While the first two were heading to Bristol, Leander was dropped off at Crewe. Both steam locos were scheduled to haul separate charters the following day.
Cardonald: A Gourock to Glasgow service calls at Cardonald on 21 July 2018. The high-mast lighting in the background is a familiar feature of the M8 corridor.
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: 21st July 2018 and the new Dundas Street entrance to Queen Street station looking not quite ready yet despite the publicity about it opening that day. It was opened by the Monday morning.
Ayr: A view of bay platforms 1 and 2 at Ayr on 21st July 2018. Due to the ongoing problems with loose masonry etc. on the hotel the concourse behind the buffer-stops is closed off and will be for a number of weeks.
Corkerhill: A Paisley Canal service calls at Corkerhill on 21 July 2018. The line by the disused platform is a headshunt for the depot and the buffers just off to the right.
Pollokshields East: A cuckoo in the nest, though indeed it will not be stopping at this station. A Pendolino for Glasgow, diverted from the WCML by engineering works, passes through Pollokshields East on 21 July 2018. It has just restarted from a signal stop to let through a humble local from East Kilbride.
Pollokshields West: On 21 July 2018 Newton services on this line were extended to Motherwell to compensate for line closures caused by engineering work, and a Motherwell service enters the station. Given that the shelter has no sides (for goodness sake) I do wonder what that gentleman has his feet on.
Crosshill: A city-bound service calls at Crosshill on 21 July 2018. Note the narrowness of the island platform.
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: What goes up... Dismantling the steelwork on the site of the abandoned building project that was to have been the new staff accommodation block at the east side of Queen Street station.
Muirhouse Central Junction: A service from East Kilbride on the last hop to Glasgow passes the junction on 21st July 2018. Photographed from the Platform of Pollokshields East, where the doings of the main line provide some entertainment between Cathcart Lines services.
Shawlands: A six-car 320 enters Shawlands with a Glasgow Central service on 21 July 2018. Don't the customers look hand-picked?
Croy: A Class 365 calls at Croy with an Edinburgh service on 21 July 2018. These temporary interlopers make a nice change and the opening windows give a greater feel of connection with the railway.
Paisley Canal: The squared-off features of a Class 314 seen at Paisley Canal on 21 July 2018. Class 314s lack everything now deemed essential: aircon, audio and visual information, toilets and even buttons to shut the door at a draughty terminus. Needless to say they will be sadly missed.
Croy: A four-car Class 156 calls at Croy with an Alloa service on 21 July 2018.
Gorebridge: A 6-car DMU comprising 170452 + 170432 forming the 0945 (Sunday) Tweedbank - Edinburgh climbs north away from Gorebridge on 21 July 2019.
Bo'ness: A1 60163 Tornado and support coach on shed at Bo'ness, having arrived overnight from Newcastle. It is due to work 'The Aberdonian' from Edinburgh to Aberdeen and return on 1st, 8th and 31st August, as well as the 7th September 2019.
Inverurie: Inverurie, looking to Aberdeen on 21st July 2019, showing the new trackwork now connected and semaphores gone.
Boat of Kintore Level Crossing: Boat of Kintore level crossing looking to the village in July 2019. The new station will be north of the village and former station site.
Boat of Kintore Level Crossing: The large (and growing) spoil heap at Boat of Kintore level crossing, seen on 21st July 2019.
Euxton Balshaw Lane: DBC 66017 heads north on the Down Fast at Euxton Balshaw Lane, on 21 July 2019, with the Seaforth to Mossend container service.
Donibristle: Running an hour early, large-logo GBRf 66789, the former EWS 66250, hauls an Arbroath - Millerhill spent ballast train down Donibristle Bank on 21 July 2019. 66714 is on the rear.
Bo'ness: View over Bo'ness yard with 37703, 20020, 37214 and the Artemis power car in attendance on 21st July 2019.
Chelmsford: Looking south east across to the elevated Chelmsford railway station in July 2019, with the disused down side station signal box seen on the right.
Ytterån: This section of the line between Krokom and Mattmar rises gradually towards the west allowing long straight stretches of track as here. The track seems to have been lowered under a road bridge in the middle of the picture. In this locality there was a station serving a popular spa village which had hotels etc in the late 19th Century based on 'healthy' spring water; it proved too popular for its own good as the spring ran dry. Nothing remains on the ground to show what was once here. As with many communities along the route the smaller halts have now been closed. Out of 44 halts and stations in the 162km between Östersund and Storlien there are now only 10 which remain open. The photo was taken from a level crossing looking east about 100 metres east of the bridge over the small river, Ytterån.
Gorebridge: The 0945 (Sunday) Tweedbank - Edinburgh calls at Gorebridge on 21 July 2019. No sign as yet of any progress on the 'Gorebridge Connected' project announced by Midlothian Council in June 2018, aimed at refurbishing and reopening the former station building along similar lines to that at Newtongrange. (Project currently delayed due to funding issues)
Chelmsford: Looking south along the elevated Chelmsford railway station from the down side, with the disused station signal box seen on the right.
Troon: A view through the frame of the fire damaged Troon station building to the platforms, seen on 21/07/2021.
Troon: View north of the fire damaged Troon station seen on 21/07/2021. The frame of the platform 1 building is on the left and the metal structure, which supports the canopies and overhead wires, can be seen.
Falahill Summit: A train on the Borders Railway heading for Edinburgh, photographed at Falahill on 21 July 2022.
Edinburgh Waverley: Recent ScotRail, CrossCountry and LNER arrivals at Waverley during the late morning of 21 July 2022. Standing at platform 10 on the left is the 1102 ex-Dunbar, alongside is the 0603 ex-Birmingham New Street, while over at platform 5 on the far right is the 0700 from London Kings Cross.
Cowdenbeath: Freightliner 66529 climbs away from Cowdenbeath with the Thornton Yard to Ravenstruther empty ballast, passing 158707/730 on the 11.48 from Edinburgh to Glenrothes with Thornton on 21 July 2022.
Falahill Summit: Rounding the curve at Falahill on 21 July 2022 is the ScotRail 0915 Edinburgh - Tweedbank formed by DMU 170429. The heathland between the camera position and the lay-by alongside the A7 was bone dry following the recent record breaking heatwave. Note the saplings in the field opposite, planted shortly before a previous visit here, now beginning to make their presence felt (see image [[68334]]).
