This view, recorded in 1978, shows the viaduct brickwork as it appeared from the Maldon West side of the river.

Blackburn: Most trains from Manchester continue through Blackburn to Clitheroe but a few turn back there using bay Platform 3. Northern Pacer 142047 arrives in the bay on 23 July and will head south towards Bolton again in a few minutes.

Oakley Junction: Looking West from a convenient layby on the A6 North of Bedford across the Midland Main Line, the remains of the Bedford and Northampton Railway's line to Northampton can be clearly seen as a curved boundary between fields in the background. I would love to see this line reopened - especially a new station at the wonderfully named Newton Blossomville - but fear it would not serve any strategic purpose. Olney may be choked with traffic in rush hour, but most of the drivers seem to be heading for Milton Keynes, not Bedford.

Entwistle: Entwistle (request halt) station, basking in the sunshine of a July day in 2011. This view looks towards the summit at Sough Tunnel. This used to be an island platform, accessed by a footbridge, with Up and Down goods lines to the right but only the single line and this face of the platform remain.

Entwistle: Having made a request stop at lonely Entwistle 150268, on a Clitheroe to Manchester Victoria service, accelerates away on the falling gradient towards Bromley Cross where double track resumes. The 737' summit of the line is at Sough Tunnel. The marker board to the left warns of the level crossing at the closed station of Turton and Edgeworth.

Entwistle: Entwistle is a remote request stop halt on the Lancashire moors. It is now on the single line between Darwen and Bromley Cross but there used to be four tracks between here and the summit at Sough Tunnel. Another passenger line went to the left of what was an island platform with two goods lines where the relay room now stands. In this view looking north in July 2011 all is quiet as 150268 calls on a Clitheroe to Manchester service.

Blackburn: Platform 4 at Blackburn, normally used for Manchester and Preston bound services, is temporarily out of use while a new waiting room is constructed. This means that all passenger trains are being concentrated on the island platform (and its bay) and the rails through Platform 4 are gathering rust. This view looks east towards Blackburn tunnel from Platform 2 and shows the work in progress.

Darwen: Appearances can be deceptive. Darwen looks like a deserted station on a double track line but in fact a sizeable number of Saturday shoppers had just joined 156472 heading north towards Blackburn on 23 July. The two tracks are actually a long passing loop, the only one on the ten mile single line section between Blackburn and Bromley Cross.

Ramsgreave and Wilpshire: A Clitheroe to Manchester service, formed by 156472, slows to a halt in the very short platform at Ramsgreave and Wilpshire. Behind the train the original Wilpshire station, closed in 1962, can be glimpsed. See image [[19868]].

Three of the Voyagers that stable at Holyhead, plus some Arriva DMUs, use the washing plant, located beyond the footbridge, during overnight servicing. Arriva WAG service stock and class 67 loco are stabled in the sidings over each weekend. Carlisle: Rather unusually, the loco off The Fellsman of 23 July 2014 took water from a tanker near the signal box at Carlisle and then made a quick sortie to Currock and London Road Junctions to turn, rather than spending about an hour out at Upperby. Springfield: Few trains call at Springfield but this Arbroath to Edinburgh service is one of them. It is the lovely warm evening of 23 July 2019. Note the 'H' car stop sign off the end of the Platform. This is not the only unlikely Fife station to have them; did they really once plan to have 8 or 9 car HSTs calling here? The ScotRail HST sign is more understandable, though so far not needed.

Springfield: An Aberdeen to Edinburgh service passes Springfield on the warm evening of 23 July 2019. I am assuming a decision was taken that the standard ScotRail livery wouldn't suit HSTs and they plumped for this rather sombre one instead. A bit of a contrast to LNER's cheerful red. Gravel platforms betoken a none-too-busy station; annual usage figures just make it into 4 figures, not even one person per train.

Edinburgh Waverley: Six service alteration posters, all different, seen at Waverley on 23 July 2019. Engineering works seem to happen more frequently as the years pass, a bit like road works. Springfield: Springfield was perhaps a surprising station to escape Beeching, but it became unstaffed early with a peak hours only service. While the rest of Scotland's stations generally have more trains than they ever had, Springfield has only 2 Up and 3 Down trains a day. The 1759 to Edinburgh is up on the not very busy board.
