Landwasser Viaduct: Of the many fine viaducts on Switzerland's superb Rhaetian Railway, the most celebrated is probably the Landwasser, sprung straight from the cliff face at its south-east end. An RhB class Ge 4/4 1 electric was photographed from the train in 1967 as it crossed the viaduct with a service from Chur to St Moritz.
Bergun: En route from Chur to St Moritz in the summer of 1967, a Rhaetian Railway class Ge 4/4 1 was photographed from the train during the climb towards the spectacular stretch of spirals between Bergun and Preda.
Portsmouth Harbour: TSMV 'Southsea' is heading from Portsmouth to Ryde, Isle of Wight, on its regular run on 24 July 1968. Photo taken from TSMV 'Shanklin' heading in the opposite direction. Both boats were built by Denny's of Dumbarton, who were responsible for quite a number of the Isle of Wight fleet.
Wadebridge: Wadebridge station had seen better days when I visited it on 24 July 1969 following a walk along the trackbed from Padstow. This was in the days before the trackbed became the Camel Trail and crossing the viaduct at Little Petherick Creek was a touch more exciting than it is today. Wadebridge station building can still be found, although the platforms and yard area have been completely redeveloped.
Stoke Gifford: A Western class diesel hydraulic, thought to be no 1062 Western Courier, passes Stoke Gifford Yard with an up express from South Wales to Paddington in the summer of 1971.

Stoke Gifford is now home to the successful Bristol Parkway station. The locomotive cannot be identified from the photograph but has been suggested as being no 1027 Western Lancer. Parson Street: Class 43 'Warship' diesel hydraulic no 858 Valorous leaving Bristol westbound with a parcels train in July 1971, seen here at Parson Street. The fine display of lower quadrant semaphore signals obviously had only a short time left.
Stoke Gifford: A special MGR working approaches Stoke Gifford yard from the east behind class 47 no 1906 on 24 July 1971. The train is thought to be returning empty from Didcot Power Station to South Wales via the Severn Tunnel.
Melton Mowbray: Having deposited passengers off the Melton Mowbray Pieman on 24 July 1977, 56008 is about to take the empty stock to Nottingham. Tour participants, having been handed a pork pie, were then bussed to Stapleford Park for a day's amusement and rejoined the train in the early evening at Leicester for the return to Barnsley. (Railscot note: The 'ripple-effect' or 'badger's bum' finish on the locomotive panels identifies this as one of the 30 examples of the class built for BR by Electroputere in Romania see image [[20227]])
Melton Mowbray: 56008 moves away from Melton Mowbray station on 24 July 1977 with the empty stock of the Melton Mowbray Pieman special from Barnsley see image [[32896]].
Barnsley: The Melton Mowbray Pieman runs north ecs into Barnsley station behind 56008 on the morning of Sunday 24 July 1977. The special, organised by BR Eastern Region, departed for Melton Mowbray at 09.00, arriving there just before lunchtime. Lunch on this occasion was provided at no extra cost by BR, who supplied each participant on arrival with... you've guessed it... a Melton Mowbray pork pie.
Elgin: 25229 propels wagons through Elgin station on 24 July 1980 destined for the ex-GNSR sidings at Elgin East.
Kirkham and Wesham: A sparkling 47429 seen nearing Kirkham with a train from Euston on 24th July 1982. Despite appearances the former D1541 was withdrawn less than five years later and cut up by a contractor at Crewe in 1989.
Woodbridge: 40004 heads the 'Broadsman Railtour' at Woodbridge, a photo stop having been arranged here for the passengers on board. This was a York to Lowestoft special which ran in July 1983, before the RETB signalling was introduced.
Glenburnie Junction: 107738 passing the site of Glenburnie Junction on 24th July 1990. My late uncle was a signalman here and worked the final shift in April 1960. The trackbed of the former route to St Fort is to the left.

The train is on its way from Rosyth to Dalgety Bay during a period when a genuine Fife Circle service was in operation. Inverkeithing: It looks like our national infrastructure operator is branching out into retail ironmongery, at least according to this van seen at Inverkeithing station on 24 July. Behind it, the marks in the rock show why it took so long to widen the vehicle access to the station a few years ago to include a bus turning circle. The brambles turn out to have been surviving on a thin covering of soil on top of solid rock which had to be laboriously (and noisily) chipped away. Blasting would have been out of the question, I imagine ...
Paignton: The 13.23 Exmouth - Paignton DMU (142029) arrives at Paignton on 24 July 2010 via Torbay Road level crossing.
Barton and Broughton: Ex-LMS Coronation Pacific no 6233 Duchess of Sutherland heads north on the WCML on 24 July 2010 with the Cumbrian Mountain Express from Liverpool to Carlisle. The train has just restarted from Barton Down Loop, having been held to allow passage of a northbound Pendolino.

Leyland: 6233 with the return Cumbrian Mountain Express from Carlisle to Liverpool accelerates through Leyland on the up fast line on 24 July following a signal check. The holdup was caused by a late running northbound Trans Pennine Express from Manchester Airport which had joined the WCML at Euxton Junction.

Stockholm Central: A northbound commuter train passes a locomotive in Stockholm Central station. The architect Adolf Wilhelm Edelsv�rd designed the original station for Statens Järnvägar (Swedish State Railways) although the present station is a new one with the original one used as the waiting area. The portion shown here, the southern end of the station, is part of the V�stra stambanan (Western Main Line) while the northern portion serves the Ostkustbanan (East Coast Line) and other routes.

Buckhurst Hill: Buckhurst Hill, Essex, seen from LUL 1992 stock on a Central Line service to Epping, on 24th July 2012. This station was opened by the Great Eastern Railway in 1892, replacing the Eastern Counties Railway station of 1856 and was first served by tube trains when LT electrification was extended from Woodford to Loughton on 21st November 1948. The station house and a short piece of platform of the 1856 station are still there to the south of the present station and once separated by a level crossing, abolished when the line was electrified for tube trains.
Lancaster: The returning Fellsman has just dropped the final passengers at Lancaster on 24 July and now the ECS is crossing the River Lune on Carlisle Bridge heading for Carnforth. K4 61994 was assisted by Stratford liveried 47580 as a fire risk precaution, but perhaps also celebrating the birth of Prince George two days earlier.
Barton and Broughton: The Fellsman heading north on the WCML at Barton on 24 July towards its final stop at Lancaster. Once again the K4 looked and sounded like it was providing the majority of the effort, although 47580 County of Essex was in attendance to assist in high fire risk areas.
Wilpshire: The return Fellsman on the climb out of the Ribble Valley approaching Wilpshire Tunnel in the early evening sunshine of 24 July 2013. Gresley K4 2-6-0 no 61994 The Great Marquess leads 47580 County of Essex, with the 47 provided due to the high fire risk - although at this point the K4 appears to be doing most of the work.
Scarborough: Jubilee 45699 Galatea at Scarborough on 24 July backing in the stock of the Scarborough Spa Express in readiness for the return journey to York.
Wilpshire: Northern DMU 150228 climbs Wilpshire Bank in the evening sunshine on 24 July 2013 with a Clitheroe to Manchester Victoria service. The train will shortly pass through Wilpshire Tunnel.
Llanerchymedd: At the south end of the station yard at Llanerchymedd in July 2014 a compound contained two diesel shunting locos, a brakevan, and a tank wagon left over from an abortive line re-opening project.
Amlwch: The former Amlwch goods shed appears disused at present. It is sited by the side of the A5025 Amlwch by-pass, just west the level crossing on that road see image [[48145]], and alongside the caravan sales outlet on the former station site. A container storage operation occupies the goods yard.
Svensta: An SJ Rc 6 loco raises some dust as it passes over the level crossing which intersects a gravel road. It was approaching the converted former railway section supervisor's cottage (Banvaktstuga) at Svensta. The overnight train had not yet appeared so it may have been sent light-engine to Duved to rescue the sleeper.
Llanerchymedd: Trackside view north at the former Llanerchymedd station in 2014 showing the then recently built Station Cafe, with external seating available on the platform weather permitting, and the refurbished former station building beyond.
Glasson Dock: A view along the East Wall at Glasson Dock. Rails formerly ran along the line now covered by the sea defence wall and continued round to join those from the dock itself at the point on the far left of the picture where a building can be seen. That marks the site of the long demolished passenger station. See image [[66272]] for a map from that operational period. Ships still load and unload at this riverside quay. Amlwch: This well maintained level crossing is immediately north of the former Amlwch station site and runs across the A5025. It is on the section of line that continued to the former Associated Octel plant on the cliff top west of Amlwch Port. View east in July 2014.
Llanerchymedd: The restored former station building at Llanerchymedd, which has now been joined to the more recent Station Café, as seen in this view across the station yard in July 2014. Tables and seating are available on the intact former platform at the rear. [Ref query 7566]
Ian Allan Book and Model Shop: The Ian Allan shop in Lower Marsh, London, due to close on 31 October 2020, seen in 2014.
Blackfriars (Old): Former entrance to the original Blackfriars Station on Blackfriars Road on 24 July 2014. Planned by the Charing Cross Railway Company, it was opened by the South Eastern Railway in January 1864 and closed five years later when replaced by Waterloo (later Waterloo East).
Llanerchymedd: View north over the extant track running alongside the platform of the former Llanerchymedd station in July 2014. Amlwch: End of the line running north from Amlwch Station passing through the gates of the former Associated Octel plant on the Anglesey coast. The plant, which once produced anti knock compound for engines (an ingredient of which was bromine extracted from seawater) finally closed in 2005 and is now partially demolished.
Llangefni: View north along the A5114 Glanhwfa Road, Llangefni, towards the town centre under the rail overbridge in July 2014. The line closed to all traffic in 1993.
Reims, France: One of the electric midi buses operating a free shuttle service, Sundays excepted, around the centre of Reims, between the station and the Cathedral. The bus is crossing the tracks of the Reims tramway by the south end of Langlet tram stop.
Lady Victoria Pit Signal Box: The morning sun catches ScotRail 158868 on 24 July as it heads south between Newtongrange and Gorebridge on a Borders Railway crew training trip.
Braehead Viaduct: A road/rail vehicle using the relaid down line while working on the new bridge on the morning of 24th July. The sleepers for the up line can be seen stored by the lineside.
Newbattle Viaduct: Odd man out. A motor car heads south on the A7 towards Galashiels during a shower of rain on 24 July 2015, having just cleared the southernmost of the 23 arches of Newbattle Viaduct. This arch differs from its 22 Neighbours in being skewed to accommodate the road and incorporating a stone lined arch ring, as opposed to the brick construction used elsewhere - as in the arch to the right.
Newtongrange: The crew of train 2Z12, the 0851 Newcraighall - Tweedbank crew familiarisation trip, takes to the platform during the scheduled stop at Newtongrange during a break in the clouds on 24 July 2015. Through the haze in the background a tanker can just be made out heading for the oil terminal at Hound Point in the Firth of Forth.

Sheriffhall [2nd]: A 158 Borders Railway crew training trip approaching Kings Gate points on 24 July 2015 at the northern end of the single line section from Fushiebridge.
Manchester Victoria: With major internal construction work complete, a Metrolink Service from Bury to Piccadilly heads out from Manchester Victoria Station on 24th July 2015 see Image [[49303]]. The modern architectural style of the new roof makes a striking contrast with that of the original Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway headquarters.
Reims, France: Looking north north west through Langlet tram stop, close to the magnificent Gothic Notre-Dame de Reims Cathedral, on the Reims light rail network. Of note is the lack of overhead catenary, with centre track induction power appearing to be utilised in order to give clear views of the Cathedral. The section of line to rear of view was out of use due to extensive works being carried out at the next, Opera, tram stop.
Reims, France: View north north west along Cours Jean-Baptiste Langlet of a scenic section of the light rail tram network that crosses Reims from north east to south west of the city. This city centre section does not use overhead catenary, instead appearing to use a mid track induction pick up arrangement to avoid marring views of Reims Cathedral, a short distance to the rear. Langlet tram stop is just beyond the van crossing the tracks ahead. Immediately behind the camera is a temporarily closed section due to rebuilding of the area around the Opera tram stop on Place Myron T Herrick.
Shawfair: Approaching Shawfair station on the morning of 24 July 2016 on its 3 minute journey from Newcraighall is the 0911 Sunday service from Edinburgh Waverley to Tweedbank. No passengers left or boarded the train during its stop here on this occasion.
Toberonochy: Photograph of an old engine house at the Toberonochy Slate Quarry on the Isle of Luing in July 2016. This is at the western end of the more southerly of the two tramways shown on the extract from an 1898 map. The now flooded quarry is behind the camera and the tramway route runs past the engine house and can be followed the short distance back to the old harbour.
Millerhill Yard: Entrance to the former up yard at Millerhill from Whitehill Road looking south on Sunday 24 July 2016. The entrance to the site is now secured and access control arrangements have been put in place. Part of the yard to the south of here will become home to an electric train depot, as specified in the EGIP project plan. Note the plant and equipment already on site in the centre background.
Isle of Luing Ferry: The ferry Belnahua off loading at the Cuan Slipway on the Isle of Seil having crossed the Cuan Sound from the Isle of Luing, whose slipway can also be seen across the channel. The Belnahua, named after a local slate island, was built at Campbeltown Shipyard in 1972.

Farington Curve Junction: Returning to Carnforth following railtour duties from Bristol on 22 July, Black 5 No.44871 is escorted back to Carnforth in light steam by 37706. The pair are seen approaching Farington Curve Jct at Coote Lane bridge on the WCML on 24 July 2018.

Perth: 43135 in the fuel road at the north end of Perth station, 24 July 2018.
Croy: ScotRail 385015 on a test run from Linlithgow to Queen Street on 24 July 2018, the first day of passenger services for the new Class 385 EMUs. 385104 and 385003 did the honours for those travellling between Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Woodacre Crossing: Not the usual evening flask train. In addition to the regular load of three wagons, 68004 and 68034 also had 37402 in the consist of the Sellafield to Crewe service on 24th July 2018. Seen crossing the Grizedale Brook at Woodacre heading south.
Woodacre Crossing: WCRC EE Type 3 37706, and 5MT 4-6-0 44871, make their way north at Woodacre on the evening of 24th July 2018. The Black 5 had been used on rail tours in the Bristol area and was working back to Carnforth in light steam.

Haymarket: The unusual upholstery on a priority seat on a new ScotRail Class 385. The unfortunate individual on the bottom right appears to have been window hanging at the door of an HST.

Leyland: The Welsh Mountaineer approaches the end of the railtour on 24 July 2018 as it passes Leyland with 8F No.48151 leading and a Class 37 tucked in behind.The service was running some 43 minutes early which resulted in the unusual sight of three steam locos arriving and departing from Preston within 30 minutes. First had been 45690 with 47237 on the Fellsman, then 44871 returning from Bristol with support coach piloted by 37706 before 48151 completed the hat-trick.
Woodacre Crossing: The Fellsman was back to steam haulage on 24th July 2018 but with diesel assistance. 45690 Leander and 47237 head for Lancaster at Woodacre on the final leg of the returning excursion.

Glasgow Queen Street High Level: The new signage on the as yet unopened George Square entrance to Glasgow Queen Street. 24th July 2020.
Tondu North Junction: Tondu North Junction, with the line from Maesteg on the left, on 24th July 2020. Signals are still in place on the Ogmore Vale line, some thirty odd years since the last train ran up the valley.
Croston: The 1726hrs Preston to Ormskirk service with 156426 calls at Croston on 24th July 2020. View looking south from the B5247 road bridge.
Tondu North Junction: Transport for Wales Turbostar 170202, shortly after passing Tondu North Junction, with a Cardiff Central to Maesteg service on 24th July 2020. Tondu station overbridge is just visible top right.
Cefn Junction: A view east along the track to the level crossing, which crosses Fountain Road between Cefn Jct and Tondu, on 24th July 2020. As can be seen the line is not much used these days but is still officially operational.

Kenfig Hill: A view along Station Road at Kenfig Hill, looking towards Tondu, on 24th July 2020. The track bed and station ran parallel to the road.
Cefn Junction: Cefn Junction, where Llynvi and Ogmore Railway and the Ogmore Vale Extension split. The line to Kenfig Hill, Pyle and Porthcawl ran to the left and the line going right towards Margam and Port Talbot. The OVE is still operational but has not been used for some time. 24th July 2020.
Leyland: Another Class 317 returns to Ilford from refurbishment at Kilmarnock on 24th July 2020. 317886 was hauled south by ROG operated 37884 and is seen approaching Leyland.
Hincaster Junction: 60163 'Tornado', apparently standing in for the expected 46201 in between its own 'Aberdonian' turns [[77565]], climbs past Hincaster Junction on 24th July 2021. The A1 was heading towards Oxenholme with a Pullman excursion from Telford to Carlisle that it had taken over at Carnforth and would later take over the Settle and Carlisle.
Grafton East Junction: 45596 'Bahamas' running westbound past Crofton on the GWR Berks & Hants Rly on 24th July 2021. This was a trip from Paddington to Bishops Lydeard on the West Somerset Railway.
Kirkland Yard: This footbridge crossed the mill lade which ran along the south side of Kirkland Yard. At the far end it led to - until it was accidentally scrapped - the lattice footbridge which crossed over the west end of the yard.
Thornton Junction: This is a view under the railway, the access road under the ECML to the golf club. Thornton Junction station was just to the south (access to it was via a footbridge). Yes, those wall supports are bulging inwards.
Kirkland Yard: Andrew Barclay 2046/1937, once of British Aluminium Co., Burntisland (see image [[71732]]), undergoing cosmetic restoration at The Fife Heritage Railway's Kirkland depot, on 24 July 2021.
Shawfair: A 158 heads for Tweedbank while a 170 draws in for Edinburgh on the morning of 24 July 2021. Just for once I'll make no comment about the station footfall or the extent of housing development.
Kirkland Yard: Home-built 4wPM self-propelled trolley, outside the Fife Heritage Railway's Kirkland depot, on 24th July 2021. My thanks to Pete Westwater for the guided walkaround.
Ropley: BR 08 D3462 was shed pilot in Ropley yard on 24th July 2022. As 08377 it was withdrawn in 1983 after 26 years BR service and so will celebrate 40 years in preservation next year, having gone first to the West Somerset and then to the Mid-Hants in 2013.
Ropley: West Country Bulleid 4-6-2 34007 'Wadebridge' being worked on, possibly being prepared for a Heavy overhaul, in Ropley Shed yard, Mid-Hants Railway, on 24th July 2022.
Gorebridge: A strikingly colourful floral display brightens up the platform on an otherwise dull and overcast Sunday morning at Gorebridge on 24 July 2022. No doubt much appreciated by window watchers aboard the ScotRail 0947 ex-Tweedbank as it restarts its journey north to Edinburgh Waverley.
Ridgmont: A community group has restored the station building at Ridgmont from near derelict condition to create a splendid small museum and a tea shop. Wednesday to Sunday this makes an excellent stop off point by Junction 13 of the M1. This is the former ticket office but the station building also acted as the signal box for many years, albeit with an outside lever frame, protecting the level crossing.
Ropley: Diesel haulage on the Mid-Hants on 24th July due to ongoing concerns about lineside fires in the hot dry conditions. Brush 4 47579 'James Nightall GC' is seen arriving at Ropley.
Ridgmont: Marston Vale services between Bletchley and Bedford do not normally operate on Sundays but on 24th July 2022 the Bedford River Festival justified a 2-hourly shuttle service along the line. 230003 calls at the intermediate station at Ridgmont heading for Bedford. The low building in the background is the Marston Vale signalling centre. This replaced all the mechanical boxes on the line and operates 24/7 as some freight services operate over this route during the night.
Ropley: Southern Railway Urie S15 4-6-0 No.506 (BR 30506), in Ropley Shed yard on 24th June 2022. This LSWR built operational loco was 100 years old in 2020.
Gorebridge: A northbound service on the Borders Railway approaching the Gorebridge stop on the morning of 24 July 2022. The train has recently come off the double track section from Tynehead at Fushiebridge Junction, just out of shot to the right. ScotRail DMUs 170412+170433 are forming the 0947 (Sundays) Tweedbank - Edinburgh Waverley.
