Cairnie Junction: An Elgin-Aberdeen train via the coast route, arriving at Cairnie Junction in 1964, behind an NBL Type 2. The train is about to cross to the main southbound line, where it will then reverse back into the station. This strange-looking procedure was perhaps a relic from earlier days, when trains via the 'Coast' route usually joined forces with trains from the 'Glen' route, the stock of the latter being left sitting in the platform waiting for the Coast portion to reverse on to it before the combined train carried on towards Aberdeen. A curiosity of the track layout at Cairnie was that there did not seem to be a crossover at the far end of the station that would have enabled the Type 2 to enter the station on the main platform line, so the reversal procedure was still having to be used even though there was no train to join up with!
Cairnie Junction: On the face of it, a quiet summer afternoon at Cairnie Junction in 1964. Not so, however. The Cravens DMU arrived a few minutes earlier from Elgin via the 'Glen' route (see [[82826]]) and has moved into the siding pending the imminent arrival of loco-hauled northbound and southbound 'Coast' route services. The first to come in, arriving at the left-hand side of the island platform, will be a train from Aberdeen with an NBL Type 2(see [[82781]]). The southbound train, also with an NBL Type 2, will come through the centre right-hand track before reversing back to the right-hand side of the platform to allow passengers to board or alight (see [[82919]]). A quirk of the track layout at Cairnie was that there seems not to have been direct access to the platform for trains arriving on the track being used by the Type 2. This may have been a legacy from earlier days, when Coast and Glen trains joined forces at Cairnie. The Coast train was perhaps always expected to reverse on to a Glen portion before the combined train went on towards Aberdeen. Going back now to the afternoon of the photograph, the final act in the intensive burst of activity will take place after both Type 2s have gone and will be the movement of the DMU out on to the southbound main line then back to the left-hand side of the platform, before it heads off along the 'Glen' route. This last departure will take place a mere sixteen minutes after the original arrival of the DMU, to conclude a very smartly-run piece of railway operation!

Float Viaduct: The 1200 Glasgow Central - London Euston runs over Float Viaduct shortly after passing Carstairs on 31 August 2016.
Breich: On the way out? Breich Station may be closed to save the costs of replacing the footbridge which is incompatible with electrification work being carried out on the line. In the distance and seemingly within reach of the platform ends is the recently replaced overbridge carrying the A706 over the Shotts line. However, enhanced clearance standards for new overhead wiring would also necessitate relocating the platforms further east at additional cost should the station be retained.
Breich: Network rail has proposed that the little used station at Breich be closed. This would avoid the cost of replacing the footbridge to accommodate electrification work being carried out on the line. [See recent news item]
Shotts: 67008, running light engine from Mossend to Millerhill, passes under Station Road bridge on the last day of August 2016. Work to replace the bridge has now started, with the road due to close in September for 11 months.

Fauldhouse: Pre-electrification view from the new footbridge at Fauldhouse on 31st August 2016. The Wilsontown, Morningside and Coltness Railway passed under the tracks of the Cleland and Midcalder Line just about the point where the line disappears behind the trees in the distance.
Carnwath: The 1051 Edinburgh Waverley - London Euston via Birmingham New Street approaching Carstairs East Junction on 31 August 2016. The train is passing a large works depot occupied by South Lanarkshire Council roads department. The depot stands on the site once occupied by Carnwath station (closed 1966).

Shotts: The 1019 to Glasgow Central arrives at Shotts on an overcast day in August 2016. Despite the absence in this view of any obvious signs of the pre-electrification work, preparations are well in hand. Behind the camera at the end of platform one there is now a sizeable contractor's compound with an access point for the bridge replacement work.
Shotts: Seen looking west from the corner of the SPT car park at Shotts on 31 August 2016, a Glasgow bound Class 158 DMU passes the rail access point recently constructed as part of the large contractor's compound for the works at Shotts station.
Heysham Port: 150119 leaves Heysham Port with the daily boat train to Leeds via Lancaster on 31st August 2016. See image [[20421]] taken from the same spot almost eight years to the day previously, since when freight traffic through Heysham has grown considerably.
Lampits Junction: Heavy looking rain clouds approaching Carstairs from the north on a grey 31 August 2016, as the ScotRail 1133 Edinburgh - Ayr service crosses Lampits Road heading for Carstairs East Junction and a scheduled 16 minute stopover in Carstairs station.
Float Viaduct: The 0832 Dalston - Grangemouth empties crossing Float Viaduct on 31 August 2016 behind Colas Rail 60087.

High Morlaggan Railway Cottage: On its way north to Arrochar and Tarbet alongside Loch Long this Sprinter is dwarfed by its surroundings. The Cobber is off to the top left and Ardgarten is by the lochside below.

Kirkconnel: Scotrail 156508 calls at Kirkconnel on 31 August 2018 whilst working the 1013hrs service from Glasgow Central to Carlisle.
Woodford Halse: Looking South from Preston Road, Eydon, a concrete signal post can be seen standing perfectly upright by the down line near the skyline. There are two ways to look at this picture. Logically, rationally, and objectively, concrete signal posts are heavy, so they must be securely planted; and have no scrap value, so there is little point in removing them in open country. A more romantic analysis admires the stoicism of this post in waiting patiently for 50 years for common sense to return to British transport policy. I know which view I prefer. See also image [[33960]].
Auchinleck: The 1112 hrs Carlisle to Glasgow Central gets ready to depart from Auchinleck on 31 August 2018 as the guard starts the door closure sequence.
Blakesley: A little known station on the little known S&MJ (known as the 'Nibble' according to Richard Hardy, a former Woodford Halse shedmaster), Blakesley has been heavily extended and modernized. The high level platform in the tree on the right looks scary. View looks towards Towcester.
Newton-on-Ayr: 380103 calls at Newton-on-Ayr on 31 August 2018, while working the 1506hrs Ayr to Glasgow Central stopping service.
Ayr: The main line is blocked and scaffold bridge from Platform 1 to 2 (seen here) thence 3 and 4. Surprisingly the main footbridge is still open. the hotel is on the right.
Ayr: The main line south through Ayr station is now blocked and there is a scaffold bridge from Platform 1 to 2 thence 3 and 4. Surprisingly the main footbridge is still open. View south on 31 August 2018 with the hotel on the right.

Dunblane: A close up of the memorial plaque for James Palmer Huffam VC, on the forecourt at Dunblane station. It faces Inchallan House, where he was born on 31st March 1897.
Lochwinnoch: 380010 hurries through Lochwinnoch with a Glasgow Central to Ardrossan Harbour service in the evening of 31 August 2018. The photo was taken from a similar spot to a recent mystery image. See image [[65413]].
Barassie: The line from Kilmarnock swings south towards the junction (behind the camera) with the Kilwinning to Ayr line (out of shot to the left). The former platform for the Kilmarnock has gone but see image see image [[26338]] for how it used to be.
Newton-on-Ayr: One of the few services operating out of Ayr on 31 August 2018 due to the structural issues with the Station Hotel in Ayr, is seen approaching Newton-on-Ayr station.
Kirkconnel: The 1013 hrs from Glasgow Central to Carlisle heads south from Kirkconnel on 31st August 2018.

Bruce Grove: Bruce Grove station in the Tottenham area of north London, on the Liverpool Street to Enfield Town and Cheshunt line, part of London Overground since 31st May 2015, looking south on 31st August 2019. The station opened on 22nd July 1872 with the extension of the line from Stoke Newington to Lower Edmonton (now Edmonton Green). The waiting rooms here are boarded-up and obsolete.
London Fields: Entrance to London Fields station, built into one of the arches of the GER viaduct of 1872 that extends from Bethnal Green to Hackney Downs, seen here on 31st August 2019. The station is served by trains to Enfield Town and Cheshunt which, along with the line to Chingford, became part of London Overground on 31st May 2015. Chingford trains do not normally call here, passing by on the fast tracks on the east side of the viaduct which are without platforms as is the case at Cambridge Heath station, the next stop south towards Liverpool Street. Greater Anglia trains to Cambridge and the Stansted Express trains also serve these tracks.
Rectory Road: Rectory Road station, with replacement waiting shelters for the original Victorian structures, looking north on 31st August 2019. This station serves an area of residential streets in the southern part of the north London district of Stoke Newington, where I was born, and opened on 27th May 1872 with the first stage of the GER's new line from Bethnal Green as far as Stoke Newington and which was extended to Lower Edmonton (now Edmonton Green) and a junction with the ex-Eastern Counties Angel Road to Enfield line, on 27th July 1872.
Tower Burn Viaduct: The eastern extent of the surviving section of Tower Burn Viaduct, Dunfermline, which now terminates alongside Winterthur Lane. View is north on 31 August 2019.
Leyland: Freightliner Class 86s are becoming less common on WCML container trains as the Class 90s that had been on hire for Caledonian Sleeper duties have returned. On 31 August 2019 86639 and 86614 pass Leyland with a rare daylight service from Coatbridge to Crewe.
Muchalls Mill Viaduct: After waiting at Muchall's Mill for about 3/4 hour I was getting worried as 'Tornado' was well past its 13:23 Stonehaven passing. I was busy checking checking NR Enquires on my iPhone to find there had been a signal failure at Dundee and trains to Aberdeen were running late then round the bend it comes! It was a quick grab to get the camera and this shot resulted. 31st August 2019.
Donibristle Platform: A1 60163 Tornado makes light work of Donibristle bank unaided with the 'Aberdonian' on 31 August 2019.
Rectory Road: Southbound platform at Rectory Road station, north London, originally opened by the GER in 1872 and part of London Overground since 2015, with the rather ghastly buildings on both the platform and road overbridge that replaced the original Victorian structures in the mid-1980s, on the afternoon of Saturday, 31st August 2019. The station entrance/exit building is not on Rectory Road at all, being actually round the corner on Evering Road.

Dunfermline Upper: View west over the site of Dunfermline Upper station on a wet 31 August 2019 - with one or two changes having taken place over the past 30 years or so.... see image [[19630]]. For trackbed now read roadway, for platforms read parking bays and for goods shed read B&Q store.
Lancaster: Most of the Avanti Voyagers are still in Virgin red and silver but 221101, which briefly carried a revised Virgin scheme, has been completely deliveried. It is seen here, with a class mate, crossing the Acre Moss Lane bridge as it departs from Lancaster heading south on 31st August 2020.
Dalmeny: LNER Azuma 800105 enters Dalmeny on 31 August. Nothing unusual in 2020, but this is the 0755 from Inverness to Kings Cross, diverted through Fife because of the Polmont washout. LNER services to and from Aberdeen are suspended because of the Carmont landslip.
Lancaster: 397007 pauses at Lancaster with a TPE Liverpool to Glasgow service on 31st August 2020. This was my first visit to Lancaster station since the March lockdown - a few people travelling but nothing like a 'normal' Bank Holiday Monday.
Cambridge Heath: The Great Eastern Railway viaduct of 1872 crossing the Regents Canal, just to the north of Cambridge Heath station, looking east on 31st August 2020. This viaduct carries London Overground trains from Liverpool Street to Chingford, Enfield Town and Cheshunt as well as Stansted Express and Cambridge services. The Regents Canal is celebrating its bi-centenary in 2020, having opened in 1820 to link the Grand Junction Canal at Paddington with the Thames at Limehouse. Both canals were amalgamated in 1929 to form the Grand Union Canal but the Regents Canal is still known colloquially by its original name.
Earlseat Loading Pad: The westernmost section of the former Methil, future Levenmouth, line is still in good order thanks to use from 2012 to around 2015 by coal trains from the Earlseat opencast site. This view looks towards Thornton North Junction from Double Dykes level crossing on 31st August 2021. The Earlseat Loading Pad was just behind the camera and the survival of this track should assist with relaying the branch.
Earlseat Loading Pad: Looking east from the Double Dykes level crossing towards the site of the Earlseat coal loading pad in August 2021. This was in use between 2012 and around 2015 [[40284]]. Track and landscape have reverted to their former state. The first mile (at least) of the Methil branch remains in place.
Aberdeen Waterloo: Some sort of heavy maintenance was taking place at Aberdeen Waterloo on 31st August 2021, but I couldn't figure out what and I didn't have time to hang around to find out.
Tullybreck Level Crossing: The level crossing at Tullybreck, about a kilometre east of Double Dykes crossing, seen in August 2021. Amazingly the up line remained in place. It has been announced that all level crossings on the re-opening Levenmouth line will be stopped up.
Oakamoor: Now that is one classy crossing keeper's cottage. The tunnel behind it, however, was reputed to be the wettest on the North Staffordshire Railway.
Lancaster Old Junction: 45699 'Galatea' is still running on mixed identities but makes a splendid sight and sound leaving Lancaster with 'The Dalesman' on a Tuesday morning. West Coast Railways have used all four of their currently operational locos on this service in 2021 with 35018, 45690 and 46115 also taking their turns.
Blackford: A plaque which was unveiled to commemorate completion of the Blackford Rail Freight Facility development.
Cameron Bridge: Looking east from the A915 bridge towards the compound, and site of the new Cameron Bridge station, on 31 August 2022. See image [[78918]] from November 2021.
Cameron Bridge [1st]: Looking west from Station Road bridge down to the now cleared site of Cameron Bridge station on 31st August 2022. The loading bank has been removed but the yard track remains for the time being.
Stoke Mandeville: HS2 Construction. There is a vast swathe being cut across Buckinghamshire for HS2. This is where it crosses Risborough Road near Stoke Mandeville, seen on 31st August 2022. I counted 180 paces fence to fence.
Heysham Port: 'Seatruck Precision' leaves Heysham heading for Warren Point with a load of semi-trailers on 31st August 2022. In the foreground of this picture, taken from the Bowland Fells, is another iconic transport landmark, namely the tower of the M6 services at Forton. Heysham Power Stations loom large by the coast and the Furness peninsula lies beyond.
Stroud: What a lovely station! I must go there when a train is due. (I tried, but my satnav was ridiculously optimistic about the journey time.) View looks West, so the platform on the right is for London.

2018 | How the Hogwarts Express was saved from a Welsh scrapyard [BBC News] | Emerging from the clouds of steam engulfing platform nine and three-quarters, the gleaming Hogwarts Express commands a special place in the hearts of Harry Potter fans. Yet there was a time when the only place this engine could call home, was a south Wales scrapyard where it lay rotting among the hulks of a bygone era. That is because the train that entranced millions of Potter viewers and now sits proudly in Warner Brothers Studios, was once earmarked to be dismantled for the furnace. Written off, abandoned and forgotten for 17 years, this lowly engine^s final destiny was the furnace rather than Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and wizardry. But the story of humble GWR 5972 Olton Hall, is as enchanting as any told by JK Rowling. |
