Opened on the Aberdeen Railway. The shed at Brechin was replaced at the same time as the Forfar and Brechin Railway opened (1895) and in readiness for the opening of Brechin and Edzell District Railway (1896). This was a two road shed. The shed was served by a headshunt which was approached from the east. From the headshunt lines served the shed building, a siding and the turntable. The water tank was on the south side of the headshunt. It was located east of the original Brechin Shed [1st] and Brechin Goods [2nd].
Edzell Shed closed in 1910 and its duties were taken over by the shed at Brechin. The Edzell branch closed (for a second time) to passengers in 1938. In 1939 Montrose Shed [CR] burned down and the locomotives were reallocated to Brechin shed.
Brechin Shed's duties were taken over by Montrose Shed [NBR] in 1952. Shortly afterwards, also in 1952, passenger services were withdrawn from Bridge of Dun to Brechin and from Brechin to Forfar [2nd] (Forfar South Junction).
The Forfar route was closed between Brechin and Careston in 1958 and the Edzell branch closed in 1964.
The Strathmore main line itself closed in 1967, although a portion was retained between Kinnaber Junction and Bridge of Dun so that the Brechin line could remain open to goods traffic. Brechin to Kinnaber Junction closed in 1981, unfortunately the shed was demolished in the late 1970s.
Brechin to Bridge of Dun has survived as the preserved Caledonian Railway.
Andover Primary School occupies the location of the shed now, the school building being south west of the engine shed site.
