It is no excuse for Transport Scotland to state that the current ScotRail fleet was inherited from the private operator Abellio upon re-nationalisation in April 2022 as if it itself was not to blame ('LibDems urge end to 1970s-style railways', The Herald, January 4). The ScotRail Alliance has unveiled commemorative trains as part of its activity to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Five of ScotRails Class 170 trains have been branded with a specially designed logo depicting soldiers charging on the front line above the words Remembrance 100.

The trains are the latest demonstration of the ScotRail Alliances support for Poppyscotland.

ScotRail is to run 10 more trains each day between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The rail operator had to reduce its service through the central belt earlier this year after the lease on some carriages came to an end.

ScotRail said it had signed a deal to hire 10 electric trains, which should allow them to carry at least 17,000 additional passengers each day.

The trains will operate on the main line between Glasgow and Edinburgh, via Falkirk High.

In February, ScotRail had to cut the number of carriages on some of its trains through the central belt.

The disruption was caused by some class 170 diesel trains reaching the end of their lease period while the new electric trains have been hit by delays.

With around 7,000 new rail vehicles on order to replace more than half of the passenger rolling stock fleet, Britains trains are about to change as never before. Scotland is no exception. In 2018, Hitachis Class 385 electric multiple units (EMUs) will replace the Class 170 diesel multiple units (DMUs) on the Edinburgh to Glasgow main line. Once further electrification is completed, more Class 385s will displace DMUs on services to Dunblane and through Shotts.

This year will also see some of the iconic British Rail High Speed Trains (HSTs) get a new lease of life as specially refurbished four and five-car sets operating on Scottish Inter-City services.

In 2012, Transport Scotland published the results of its rail passenger service consultation. This considered how the railway should develop and the types of passenger services required. Its results were incorporated into the specification for the ScotRail franchise which was renewed in 2014.

One conclusion from this consultation exercise was that passengers traveling from central Scotland to Aberdeen and Inverness much preferred to travel in Virgin Trains East Coast High Speed Trains (HSTs) from London than ScotRails Class 170 diesel multiple units (DMUs).

For this reason, the invitation to tender (ITT) document for the ScotRail franchise included a specification for improved rolling stock for Scotlands internal inter-city services that could have been based on the HSTs mark 3 coach. In its franchise bid, Abellios response to this requirement was that it would provide refurbished HSTs on the routes that serve Scotlands seven cities (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling, Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness).

ScotRails 26 HSTs

The HSTs will be phased into service from summer 2018, with the full fleet operational for the May 2019 timetable change. This aligns with the completion of Network Rails Highland main line journey time improvements project. 54 power cars and 121 coaches will be leased from Angel Trains. These will make up 17 five-coach trains and 9 four- coach trains with two power cars spare. The 2019 timetable will require 23 trains in service each day with five coach sets operating Central Belt to Aberdeen services and the four coach trains generally running to Inverness. The number of through services from Inverness to the Central Belt via Aberdeen will also be increased.

Transport Minister, Derek Mackay, today announced a revolution in rail in Scotland, which will deliver the largest programme of benefits to rail passengers seen in a generation. ScotRail will introduce 200 new services, providing 20,000 more seats per day, with passengers across Tayside, Stirlingshire, Perthshire, Aberdeenshire and the Borders set to feel the benefits. This represents a significant enhancement to ScotRails current timetable, which currently runs 2,300 services per day. Timetable improvements are made possible by the decision by the Scottish Government to retain 13 additional Class 170 diesel trains (39 additional carriages) beyond the terms of their current leases, which were due to end on 2018. These extra trains create the capacity to make timetable service improvements “ with input supplied by local stakeholders to find the best fit for local priorities.

Four ScotRail trains serving key cities have returned to service after a refurbishment under a £6 million enhancement programme.
They are the first of 33 trains to receive interior and exterior makeovers in a project due to be completed in December next year.
All the work is being carried out at Railcare Limited's depot in Springburn, Glasgow - which employed 12 more people for the contract.
The project, aimed at enhancing passenger comfort, takes place during routine maintenance cycles.
It includes new carpets and toilet flooring and also involves rebranding the Class 170 trains in the new 'ScotRail, Scotland's Railway' unified livery.
Two of the fleet, which previously had Standard Class seats only, have now been fitted with new First Class compartments.
All the trains run on Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness routes.

First ScotRail has awarded two contracts to Bombardier Transportation, the
rail industry supplier based in Derby.

The move is set to bring a range of further improvements to the train
operator's diesel fleet, for the benefit of customers.

The main contract is a fleet support agreement for which Bombardier will
provide technical support and spare parts for First ScotRail's 59 Class 170
trains, up until 2011.

Bombardier will also supply heavy maintenance materials for these carriages
which operate services between Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness,
as well as in Fife and local services from Glasgow Queen Street.

This maintenance work will be carried out at Haymarket depot, which is
currently undergoing a £6 million programme of enhancements, thanks to
joint funding by Scottish Executive and First ScotRail.

In addition, the contract includes the installation of remote monitoring
hardware and the development of condition monitoring software, to further
improve and enhance fleet performance.

A second contract, valued at over £1.5 million, has also been agreed. This
will see the installation of Passenger Information Systems (PIS) on First
ScotRail's Class 158 diesel trains as well as the upgrade of the existing
PIS equipment on the earlier Class 170 trains. This programme of
improvements will also be carried out at Haymarket depot.

The Strategic Rail Authority has set out its priorities in Scotland for the next ten years. Edinburgh Waverley is to be re-built with further through platforms at a cost of £400 million. This work will involve connecting the bay platforms 8&9 and 12&13, raising the glass roof and providing another platform to the south of the station. The work is required as the station will reach capacity in the next year. Stirling to Alloa is to be re-opened to passengers within 5 years. It is also hoped that Stirling to Kincardine will also re-open to freight. Hamilton to Larkhall is to be re-opened and a Milngavie to Larkhall service to be introduced within 5 years. This may also include the re-opening of the Anniesland to Maryhill curve. Platforms will be extended on the Fife Circle which will allow longer trains to run, increasing passenger capacity. Platforms will also be extended on the Glasgow to Ayr line. Platforms will be extended on the East Kilbride Branch. Platforms will be extended on the Bathgate Branch. TPWS will be fully implemented by 2003. Increased capacity will be provided between Glasgow and Paisley. This could be re-signalling or re-quadrupling the line. Increased capacity will be provided between Glasgow and Kilmarnock. This will probably be through adding a new dynamic loop on the single track section between Barrhead and Kilmarnock which is currently only broken at Lugton. 140 stations are to be modernised. Construction of new interchange stations or re-building of existing stations will include Gourock, Markinch and Partick. Refurbishment for 318s and reliability improvements to 170s. Extension of Sunday services on the Shotts and East Kilbride Lines. A new national test track to be established. As a result of various schemes 6 new stations will open; Alloa, Newcraighall, Brunstane, Gartcosh, Larkhall and Beauly. Longer term plans include East Coast Main Line upgrading (to complete by 2010) and lines to Glasgow Airport and Edinburgh Airport. There is an element of uncertainty as the ScotRail franchise is due for renewal and the future of Railtrack is not clear at this stage. The West Coast Main Line enhancements to allow 140mph running may not go ahead.
