Trains between Ardrossan, Kilwinning and Largs have been cancelled this afternoon due to a fault with overhead power lines in Saltcoats.

ScotRail has suspended all trains between North Berwick and Edinburgh today due to damage to the overhead power supply on the track. Major repairs are needed to the overhead powerline at Prestonpans which Network Rail says is unlikely to be fixed until 8pm.

Speaking shortly after 7.30am, ScotRail stated that due to damage to overhead electrical wires, all services planned to run through the station will be cancelled, delayed or revised.

Major work to boost reliability and bring better journeys for passengers will get underway this weekend. There will be significant changes to services between Newcastle and Scotland on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September, as well as from Saturday 1 to Monday 10 October inclusive. Rail trade unions have also announced industrial action for 1 and 5 October. Passengers are reminded to plan ahead, check before they travel and allow extra time for their journeys.

Rail passengers face slower journeys between Edinburgh and Newcastle because of a shortage of electric power on the east coast main line. TransPennine is now investigating whether software adjustments can be made to its Nova 1 trains so that they would draw less electric power from the overhead wires, permitting them to be switched from diesel.
