A brake pipe valve was left closed on a Caledonian Sleeper train which overshot the platform at Edinburgh Waverley, a preliminary rail accident investigation has found.
The Northbound Lowlander service ended up 650m (711 yards) east of the station following the incident on 1 August. The error happened when the locomotive had been attached at Carstairs. With luxury double rooms, en suite showers and a breakfast service which includes smoothie bowls and eggs royale, the relaunch of the renowned Caledonian Sleeper just over 100 days ago seemed to have elevated the train service to the highest standards of luxury and convenience.But since the £150m fleet of trains was introduced in April, it has been beset with difficulties from severe delays and botched reservations to food shortages and a broken air conditioning unit. One passenger complained of a power cut, while another one was forced to sleep with the lights on.

The Caledonian Sleeper train was stopped using an emergency brake after overshooting the platform at Edinburgh Waverley.
The Northbound Lowlander service ended up several hundred yards to the east of the station after the incident on Thursday. Operator Serco confirmed the train's manager deployed the emergency brake. An inspector from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch was sent to the scene to gather evidence. The train blocked a junction, halting trains to and from North Berwick, Dunbar, Tweedbank and London. An investigation has been launched after a Caledonian Sleeper train arriving at Edinburgh Waverley overshot the platform.
The Northbound Lowlander service ended up in Abbeyhill to the east of the station following the 08:45 incident. It blocked a junction, halting trains to and from North Berwick, Dunbar, Tweedbank and London. Lightning strikes have caused disruption for rail passengers in Scotland with several services delayed or cancelled.
Train passengers in the Highlands were held up due to damage to the signalling system between Inverness and Beauly. Similar equipment damage in the north of England caused delays to Caledonian Sleeper services between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Caledonian Sleeper staff have voted for industrial action in a dispute over 'appalling' working conditions.

A 'rescue train' was sent to help passengers from a Caledonian Sleeper service which broke down in a remote area of the Highlands.
The overnight service to London Euston was cancelled due to a power failure shortly after it left Fort William on Friday. Caledonian Sleeper 'sincerely apologised' and said Sunday night's services would start from Edinburgh. It is the latest in a series of problems facing the rail firm. Passengers booked on Caledonian Sleeper services are facing further disruption after a train's wheels were damaged earlier this week.
A replacement bus picked up customers in the West Midlands on Wednesday morning after their Scotland-bound train encountered a 'technical issue'. It meant Wednesday night's service back to London and Thursday's Euston-Edinburgh service were not able to run. Now two further overnight services have been cancelled. Passengers on the first of the new Caledonian Sleeper trains from Scotland to London arrived three hours late after signalling problems on the line.
The northbound service to Glasgow and Edinburgh was also delayed after being hit by what operators Serco called 'teething problems'.
