ScotRail today announced that it is making changes to its Highland Explorer service to support active travel. From Spring 2023, ScotRail will remove the additional fare for the Highland Explorer service and introduce the carriages, which boast 20 cycle spaces and were a UK-first, to the Mallaig branch of the West Highland Line, resulting in more seats and enhanced on-board facilities for customers.

Rail campaigners have called for more seats to be added to ScotRail's innovative cycle carriages to ease passenger over-crowding when few bikes are carried. The call came as ScotRail confirmed it planned to expand the Highland Explorer service from the Glasgow - Oban line, where it was introduced in 2021, to the Glasgow - Mallaig route from March.

ScotRail is struggling to find ways to make full use of the five Class 153 units which have been converted to carry 20 bicycles each. Deployment anywhere outside the West Highland line as at present, now seems to be highly unlikely for a variety of reasons, and even on the West Highland the options are severely limited by the current infrastructure.
