Network Rail completes upgrade in Warrington and Preston section of West Coast Main Line [Railway Technology]

Network Rail has completed major improvement work on the railway between Warrington and Preston as part of the West Coast Main Line upgrade in Lancashire, UK. Work under the project involved the replacement of four old junctions and re-laying of 3 miles of track, 21,500t of ballast and 6,600 new railway sleepers to increase line speeds. The four mainline junctions upgraded include Golbourne Junction, Bamfurlong, Wigan Springs Branch and Balshaw Lane. Services have resumed along the route, with trains running at speeds of 80mph across one of the new junctions.
